Hi, I'm an African American female and resident of Florida. I'm a junior in the IB program, my schedule is as follows:
AP U.S. History- A
IB Math Studies- A
AP Biology- C (May be able to pull this up, but I doubt it)
Pre-IB Spanish 3- A
IB World Geography- A
AP Psychology- A
AP English Lit- A
I've taken: AP World History, English Pre-IB, Geometry Honors, Pre-IB Biology, Spanish Pre-IB 1, AP European History, Algebra 2 Honors (took Algebra 1 in middle school), Chemistry Pre-IB, Spanish Pre-IB 2, AP Human Geography, and AP English.
Throughout my highschool career I've taken 4 AP exams and gotten 3's on all of them except for 1, when I got a 4. My grades are pretty fair except for my freshman year where I kinda screwed up, especially towards the latter end where my grandmother was dying and the trauma caused me to totally blow on my exams, do you think if I used the application essay and explained this as well as to retake the two classes I got C's in, FSU would be willing to over look that? Anyway, I've had loads of community service (as a requirement for IB) and was in band, on the soccer team, on the volleyball team, and a part of the english lit and photo club, I also will be joining the national honor society very soon. IDK what my unweighted and weighted GPA is, but i got a 23 on the PLAN (pre-ACT test) test and a projected score of 1630-1950 on the SATs. What are my chances of getting in this school? I would like to be in pre-med and major in biology or anatomy and human physiology, or whatever since I hear your major doesn't matter too much as long as you take the pre-med track. Also, will FSU factor in my AP elective courses when recalculating my GPA, or what?Thank you for taking the time to read this :)

Hi-
Congratulation on your excellent high school grades and obviously try your best for the remainder of your junior year to achieve all A’s on all your courses as this will easily raise your overall GPA. Also I’d strongly suggest taking both the SAT / ACT coming this May / June. Although you believe that you may not be fully ready to achieve your top scores, FSU does superscore and there is no penalty for taking these takes multiple times. Also if finances permit, take the Princeton / Test-Master etc, courses over the summer as these same courses helped me secure a 2140 on my SAT. Good Luck and keep up the good work !
One last thing and please don’t take it the wrong way, but when listing your qualifications, there is not need to mention that you are a black female on the first line of your application. The first thing to mention is that you have an excellent GPA ( strive for a 3.9 or higher) & an excellent SAT ( strive for a 1950 or higher) on your first line, then you will be admitted. !

Thank you for being so helpful, I’m planning on taking the ACT and SAT in February and March, and again after I get my scores from those tests. My mom got me the Kaplan books for both the tests (on sale on amazon!! :)) so hopefully those help? And I’m sorry to have offended you by stating my race, but unfortunately race and economic status, i’ve heard, may take a role in the admittance process.

Glad to see that you are taking my advise in positive manner and a few points-

Take the SAT / ACT as many times as you can since most colleges will
superscore them and only use your top scores. All my friends laughed at me for taking my SAT six times, but my 2140 has admitted me to FSU honors and hopefully UF.

Try your best to get the TEST MASTERS SAT book and study. If you search the web,
Princeton review will offer ½ half off their courses. Test Masters will only give 10%off.

Try for all A’s for the remainder of your junior year, not B’s, but A’s.

Everything is a numbers game, everything is secondary, you need only high SAT and high GPA !

You want to major in pre-med or something similar, but Biology is the only AP course you listed where you didn’t get an A. I thought that was kinda weird.

C’s aren’t detrimental to your application, as long as they are the exception and not the norm. It’s been shown this year though that D’s for semester grades can absolutely kill any otherwise outstanding application, so as long as you don’t have any your grades won’t impact your application too badly.

You’ve already planned to take the SAT and ACT, that’s good. If you’re science oriented, you’ll probably do better on the ACT. Make sure to take both with writing as well.

If you haven’t already, look into getting on the SAT mailing list with their SAT question of the day. It’ll help prepare you as well for what type of questions you might see on the test.

Thanks you two. My AP bio class is very challenging and I was lucky enough to get assigned a first year teacher! -sarcasm- it is my moat challenging class, but I’m quite interested in the subject matter.

If you’re a first year IBDP student, then why are you taking all AP classes? Shouldn’t you be taking first year HL and SL classes? Just wondering because my school (Suncoast Community High School) is doing the same exact thing and making all HL first years take AP. My IB History of the Americas teacher keeps telling us how much the Juniors this year screwed for the IB exam.

Anyways, I’d say focus on your CAS requirements in your Junior year and get it done early that way you can put it on your resume when you apply. My CAS really helped boost my ECs and helped me get in. As well, I’d say you really need to study for the ACT and SAT and shoot for the 30’s for the ACT and the 2000’s for SAT.

GPA wise, I had a 3.1 with all IB classes, which boosted my GPA to a 3.7 recalculated, which is okay, but since you have more AP classes than I did, I’d say your GPA would be much higher than mine.

As well, APPLY EARLY!!! It’s much easier to get in by the October deadline than it is by the January deadline, that’s how I got in.

Anyways, besides the test scores, I think you’ll get in. :D

Thank you for your input. Um, my schedule was pretty much already set (all IB kids’ schedules are every year, freshman year you chose one elective, and sophomore year you get two lol) I have to take APUSH, I can either take SL math (math studies) or HL math (pre-cal), I can take AP bio or AP chem (some kids took AP bio last year though, to get a head start), I must take the Spanish I am in now, though advanced speakers can take Spanish 4, I must take IB world geography, IB theatre, or IB art (I chose IBWG because I thought it would look better, though it is much more difficult), AP psychology was an elective I chose, just because it would boost my gpa and I heard the teacher was chill, and everyone must take AP English lit. Woo, that was a lot lol, but I hoped that cleared the confusion.
My teachers also said we are screwed for the exams, which I don’t too much mind as long as I get good grades in the class.
