SAT: 1900 (590 CR, 640 Mat, 670 Writing). I'm planning on retaking in September, hoping to break 600 on Critical Reading, and raising my total to 2000+.
Let me mention that my school, Hopkins High School was ranked 14th/768 in the state and 628 overall out of about 22,000 schools by U.S. News. It is a public school.

Extracurriculars (i'm not including the years for senior year except for the service part):
Destination Imagination- 7 years (5 years going to the state competition, one year at globals in which my team took 3rd out of 80 teams)

Piano- 8 years. Played in front of small audiences at retirement homes.

Track and Field- 5 years. Lettered once for participation (I have no athletic talent).

Cross Country- One year. I probably am not putting this on my app since it is a waste of space.

Concordia Language Villages- 6 years at the French Village, went for high school credit one year, despite my school not giving credit. I got an A-

Community Service- In 10th grade, I helped throw a dinner for people that were formerly homeless. Some of them had criminal backgrounds. This summer, I will start volunteering at Open Arms Minnesota, where we cook and deliver meals for people with Chronic Illnesses.

National Honors Society: Was an inductee junior year (only seniors can serve).

Working a job as a cashier.

For my 500 word essay, I'm writing about my experience with a man who I thought was a woman because she dressed like a woman at church, and how my views on Gays, Lesbians, Bisexuals and Transvestites changed at that moment. For my one hundred word essay, I am going to talk about how the Somali children were treated at my school when they started moving here. For the optional essay, I am writing about how I became a vegetarian and what reasons drove me toward it, and how someday, i'm thinking of becoming a vegan.
So, what do you think? Also, along with saying what kind of shot I have, please tell me what percent chance you think I have, and whether or not you'd think it was a match or reach.

undeclared major

I’m not too familiar with the universities on your list, but I do know some things about them. Your gpa seems alright for the schools you’re applying to. The ECs you listed do show commitment, a plus. Personally, I don’t think you would have a problem with the majority of those universities (including a great shot at your number one). Just work on getting those scores up (2000+ would be great).

Reasonable chances at UW. Virtually guaranteed at several of your other schools. Berkeley is a reach.

i don’t know enough about these schools to chance you- but i just wanted to make a comment about your essay. you need to be sure not to mislabel people in the essay about your views on the LGBTQ community. just be sure you understand the different gender identities before grouping them. trans* encompasses a lot of identities, and misgendering/making accidentally offensive statements/generalizations is something you don’t want to do in the essay.

i don’t get it… how are you writing your essays when uw hasn’t even posted the new ones for freshmen 2013? Unless you are answering the ones on the admission site right now… which is for freshmen 2012 (class of 2012).

uwdreamer, i believe the essay is still the same for freshmen 2013. it’s been the same for the past couple of years.

are you sure? how do you know? cause i really want to start my essays right now? have you done yours?

i’m not sure, i e-mailed admissions. i have done half of mine.

bump. 10 char.

bumpity bump bump bump

I think you can get into all the schools listed except for UC Berkleey. being an out of state applicant does help you a lot but you need to improve your SAT above 2150 to be competitive. Otherwise, I don’t see you getting in there. Anyways good luck! :)

1) University of Washington-Seattle - good odds, especially if you raise your SAT
2) University of California- Berkeley - probably not
3) Portland State University - in
6) Evergreen State College - in
7) University of Oregon - in
8) Western Washington University - in

Those ins are assuming you have relatively strong essays. I don’t know the others well enough to say.

High reach at Berkeley

FYI – “Transvestites” is considered an offensive term by most transgender people. (A transvestite is someone who derives pleasure from dressing up like the opposite sex… being transgender, which is what the T in GLBT stands for, is when your gender identity doesn’t match your physical sex…) So, ah, make sure you edit that in your essay.

haha, yeah I noticed that mistake after writing it.

bump 10 char

Many of your schools seem very within reach.
The only concern I have with your application is that your chosen essay topic is on a somewhat controversial topic, which is generally not recommended for the college essay. Make sure you approach the subject in a way that is not offensive (note the transgender/transvestite issue mentioned by absolutelyapple) and that you don’t make generalizations, as that could end up hurting your application.
Other than that, your GPA is fantastic. I don’t know how many rigorous classes are offered at your school, but you’ve taken a few AP’s, so that’s great. I think you have a pretty good chance at the schools you listed, though I don’t know too much about them. Definitely work to improve your SAT score.
Good luck! :D

If you want Berkeley, make sure you get a 2180+ on your SAT’s…

I dunno, you didn’t even win the International Human Award…
