Chance Me, Please

Hello everyone! I live in-state for University of Michigan and am currently a junior at a very competitive high school (many people get into MIT, Harvard, Yale, etc.). I plan to apply to University of Michigan, Stanford University, UC Berkely, MIT, Yale, Columbia,Cal Tech, Carnegie Mellon, and Duke. Here are my stats:

GPA (Raw) = 3.98

9th Grade
-Algebra II Honors
-ELA 9 Honors
-World History Honors
-Spanish 3 Honors
-Engineering 1 Honors

EC:
Robotics

Got straight A's

10th Grade:
-Pre-Calculus Honors
-AP US History
-AP Chemistry
-Spanish 3 (i was forced to retake it because Spanish 4 at my school is an IB class and sophomores can't take IB classes)
-Civics & Economics
-ELA 10

--I received all A's 1st semester, with the exception of Pre-Calc ( I got a B+). I got all A's in 2nd semester.

-- IB Computer Science HL 2

AP Scores:
- APUSH: 4
- Chem: 4
- Calc AB : most likely 5
- Physics Mechanics: most likely 5
- Computer Science A : probably 4

100+ community service hours tutoring elementary school students in mathematics and working as a farmhand at Tollgate Farms (historical farmstead owed by MSU)

SAT: 2270 (CR 730, M 770, W 770 Essay 10)
ACT: 34 (superscore) (E 35, M 34, R 34, S 32, essay 9)

Thank you for your time!

Any college is within your reach. I suggest getting that SAT score to 2360+. Also, why did you take Calc AB instead of BC? I suggest studying Multivariable Calc with a local university. Internships will definitely help.

Your sat is fine. Leave the work to your essays now.

JJoy, Calculus AB is a prerequisite for Calculus BC at my school. Calculus BC is a prerequisite for Multivariable Calculus. I therefore took Calc AB as a mere formality but am learning Calc II and Linear Algebra through MIT OpenCourseWare. It’s also near impossible to get an engineering internship as a high school student (believe me, I’ve tried).

Yale: Reach
Stanford: Reach
Columbia: Reach
Caltech: Reach
MIT: Reach
Duke: High Match
Carnegie Mellon: Match
UC Berkeley: Match
University of Michigan: Match
apply to 1 or 2 safeties btw. and add more ECs and volunteering if you can

Your ACT and SAT scores match pretty well. I don’t think you need to retake SAT unless you really think that score is significantly lower than your practice score. On the other hand, most schools do not superscore ACT. What are your single sitting scores in ACT? Anyway, your SAT score is above 75% for UMich and you should be a low match for LSA and match for CoE. The other schools are more competitive. You should be a match/high match for Duke and UCB, but low reach to reach for MIT, Cal Tech, Yale, and Stanford. I think you may still pick a few of these reach schools to apply as long as you have several matching schools and at least one safety on your list. You know the acceptance rates of these top schools are very low and your SAT score is around average for MIT for instance.

I retook the SAT in May because the January 2013 curve was killer (730 for -3 on CR !!) and I know I can get 2300+. Oh and I got a 32 on my first attempt at the ACT with 35 in English, 29 in Math (screwed up in bubbling the last 15 or so -_-), 32 in reading, and 32 in Science and an 8 on the essay… On my second attempt I got a 33, with 32 in English, 34 in Math, 34 in reading, and 32 in Science with a 9 on the essay. I’ll be retaking the ACT in June and am aiming for a 35. I’ll also take the Math and US History subject tests in June (expecting 800 on math and 750+ on US History). I guess I’ll add Michigan State University and Purdue as safeties. Can you chance me for those as well? I really appreciate the feedback! Thank you so much!

Amraam120: Why didn’t you do both Physics C: Mechanics and Physics C: Electricity and magnetism at the same time? I suggest doing an AoPS Calculus class so that you can skip BC Calc and go straight to Multivariable Calculus. Try to Dual Enroll your self in as many Math, Engineering and Science classes as possible. That way, when you go to college, you can start off in something like Real Analysis or Abstract Algebra.

Good choices for safety. Considering even just ACT 33, these should be great safeties. I assume you are going to take Math2 and US History for the subject tests. Have you taken other subject test(s)? It seems you are missing a science subject test for some of the schools (e.g. MIT). You probably want to add physics/chemistry to the subject test. Are you sure you want to take US History subject test? You took the AP class last year, so you may need some time to review. My D took APUSH last year and got a 5. After she tried the subject test practice last Fall, she decided not to take the US History subject test.

I haven’t taken any subject tests previously, for all available spots filled up before I could apply, but I will be taking the Physics and Lit subject tests next year. I’m also quite sure I’ll be taking the US History subject test. History, in addition to math and physics, is one of my passions and I’m almost done with my studying for it. If I cancel now, all that effort will go to waste.

Good. If you feel confident, go for it. Usually, people would take the subject tests in the same year they take AP tests. So it would have saved you some effort if you took Chem and US History subject tests last year. I know a few students also registered too late for subject test and needed their parents to drive them 50 miles to another center for testing. That happens very often as most students did not really plan ahead and register right before deadline. With Math2, US History, and Physics, you will meet the requirement for any schools on the list. When you register for the subject test in Fall, you should know which school you are going to apply. You may put those schools (particularly those safeties or require all scores) on the list for the 4 free score reports. That would save you money in submitting scores.

Amramm120: You really should take AoPS courses to get ahead in math. Also, are there any tricks in the book that you or anybody else hasn’t told me yet?

P.S. If you do all the math classes through AoPS, you can start of in Real Analysis in your very first semester of college! :D
