Chance Me PLZ! Black Kid from Detroit

Class: 2011
GPA: 3.2
ACT: 23
Class Rank: Top 10-15%
Ethnicity: African American/Black
School: Detroit Public Schools
Location: Detroit, MI
ECs: FIRST Robotics - Team Captain (Team 3398)
Volunteer Service: Mentored elementary school kids in robotics, math, and science. Then coached that team to victory in their competition.
No disciplinary record.

Schools I'm looking at:
Michigan State (#1)
University of Michigan
Arizona State
Univerisity of Illinois
Indiana University-Bloomington
DePaul University
Ohio State
And my "LOL/Dream" College: Cornell University

Just to explain a bit, my schools really bad, like safety wise. Most kids when they come, if they come, just play around and mess the school up. So bad at some point teachers wont come to work.
My GPA is low for that reason. 10th grade my teachers just didn't come. And they literally gave everyone Cs. (Sucks for me. lol)

I don't have a lot of ECs because my school doesn't have any. Basically it's sports(basketball, football, baseball, track, CC, and golf), Robotics (I'm in), Student Government, and Chess.
Can't join sports because they choose their teams before 9th grade. I never got the chance to play. And seriously, I'm not that athletic.

And I have taken an AP class. AP English 5-6. That's the only AP class offered before Senior Year. (Yeah my school sucks)

Senior Year I will be taking 4 AP classes. Robotics again. And Student Government.

And IDK if this matters but I live in a single parent home and my family makes less than 60k a year.

Thankyou for reading all this, and for chancing me. Any questions? Just ask I'll answer. And please recommend any college you think will be cool for me. No CCs or HBCUs.

Hey there! i’m not entirely sure what to say to a lot of this, but it seems like you’ve been through a lot. Schools want to know who you are-- explaining your toil in an interview or essays may seriously help you out. It seems like you’re doing the best you can at your school, so keep at it. Good luck!

Ok. Thanks.
But how do I explain this to the college? Like in my essay? Or during an interview?

If you can get a senior interview (if you’re a conversationalist) then I would try and explain what you posted, about your GPA and how you’re so committed but your school doesn’t help you support your commitment to the fullest degree. Your essay doesn’t have to be like a heart-wrenching narrative about your school experiences, but it could be.
