Well I'm kinda bored, so I decided to make a "chance meh" thread.
I Want to attend College of Engineering to major in Computer Science and Engineering

In-State
GPA: 3.85
ACT: 31 composite 34 math, 29 english, 33 science, 28 reading
Class rank: Top 10% for sure, maybe a little better, I'm not sure =/
APs: AP Computer science A: Score = 5

My high school is really small (about 100 students per class). We have virtually no clubs, and like 4 AP classes total, all of which are only available to seniors. My AP computer science class came from a special math and science magnet school I attend for half the day every day (where I take all of my math and science classes). I'm taking AP calc and AP English next year, and plan to self study for AP Physics. I have a slightly upward trend, but it's nothing special.

EC's:
*4 different programming competitions in my junior year around the country.
*Tennis in school for 1 year, out of school for other 3.
*Long distance biking for 3 years

I also dual enrolled at a local community college to take a french class. I plan on doing it again senior year.

I know my EC's are pretty terrible. However, my school has no clubs or community service requirement or anything. I was kinda lazy, but I did the best with what I had.

Are you in-state or out of state? If you’re in-state, then I’d say you’re definitely in. If you’re out of state, I’d say you still have a very good chance, but I believe they waitlist a ridiculous amount of qualified out of staters with a 3.9 GPA and a 32 ACT. You should get in though.

Thanks for the responses so far guys, and yep, I’m in state. btw, grats on getting in yourself aajjc! What were your stats like if you don’t mind my asking o_O xD

Whoops, thanks for correcting me cdz512. Sorry about that.

Thanks, yosup! I’m out of state (Maryland) but honestly my stats aren’t that impressive. I had a 3.6 UMich GPA (though my regular unweighted GPA was like a 3.75) and a 29 (31 superscored, even though UMich supposedly doesn’t superscore) on my ACT and UMich was my biggest reach. I didn’t have any sort of hook either. Surprisingly enough, I still got into LSA. Without trying to sound boastful, my high school has a good relationship with UMich so that probably helped me a good amount. You just never know what they are looking for. Acutally, I will be absolutely shocked if you don’t get accepted. Just don’t screw up the essays and apply early (before November 1st) and you should be in.

Ok, thanks! I plan on applying as soon as I can, probable late September or early October. I’m really bad at writing though…my essays probably won’t be great, but they’ll answer the question, and should be OK.

I had at least three friends read over my essays for me to give me suggestions, and I am usually a fairly strong writer. If you know your writing is weak, don’t hesitate to ask someone to look over it for you. Even if your essays aren’t fantastic, if they’re at least well polished the potential should be there for the admissions folks to see.

Thanks everyone! Like I said earlier, I’m a really bad writer, but I’ll make sure my essays adequately answer the questions and are free from errors.

From what I read on the U of M site though, the essays don’t seem to be too important in getting accepted. They give you additional consideration if you need it and your essay is exceptional. Is this true?

If your grades are fine then the essay isn’t make or break; unless you write something stupid about how you killed minorities and got away with it in your diversity essay. If your grades are below par in any regard then most of the time the essay makes a big impact on the admissions decision. That is why when I chance people I just like to remind prospective students that essays are important, even though to some students, they may seem inconsequential.

Any experiences, clubs, friends and family that have shaped your perception of diversity is a start. What makes diversity important to you. For example I wrote about the Martin Luther King Association at my school and the impact it has made on me and school cherishes it. I was dance captain in the association for 2 years and also the association led a walkout against a racist principal that we had in the past. She was fired and we were on the local news…

Well I am Asian, so I should be able to think of something about cultural diversity. Or maybe something about how my high school lacks it, because I think I’m the only Asian in my entire school @_@
