University of Illinois
Any other good engineering collages?

Thanks so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I apologize for the horrible spelling and grammar errors. Im horrible at spelling
Please feel free to say what I have to work on I know leadership and volunteering aren't my forte

Will chance back!!!

Berkeley: low reach

Good luck!

Can u afford the OOS tuition for the state schools that don’t offer aid to OOS applicants?

@GMTplus7 yes I can

Cornell, UMich, & Berkely low reah
Penn State, Illinois, GT match
Rest are safety

Good luck! You should get into a very good school!

You have goood scores + extracurriculars! I’m not familiar with all the schools so this is only for the schools I know about. I’d say you’re a good mach for U Mich, GA Tech, Penn. Purdue - safety. Berkeley and Cornell - low reach. Did you take the SAT? Good luck! :)

UC Berkeley - match
University of Michigan - match
GA Tech - match
Cornell- high match
Penn Sate- Safety
Purdue - safety
Drexel - safety
University of Illinois - safety

With AP Scores 2014
BC Calc 5
US 5
Physics 4

Okay I don’t a lot about the high reach/ high match stuff, but I definitely think your chances of getting into those schools are really good! Your grades, test scores, AP classes, and GPA’s (weighted/un-weighted) are amazing and you didn’t mention it, but did you take the SAT? The only thing I would suggest is more leadership roles and possibly some more volunteer work. You’re pretty much the perfect package so I wouldn’t worry about not getting in, I would worry about which school to pick!! Anyway, Good luck!! :)

Chance back-http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1665744-accounting-chances.html#latest

Just want to clarify that you are asking chances for the engineering schools in these mostly oos colleges.
Your ACT is within the mid 50 of admission for most of these schools… It is good but not outstanding particularly for an oos student. I assume you can afford the $55-60k per year cost for these schools, but the admission rate for oos students are often much lower than in state and requires higher stat. Here are the chances based on your credential:

Berkeley: low reach
U mich: high match to low reach (CoE mid 50 ACT 31-34)
GA tech: high match
Cornell: low reach
CMU: low reach
Penn-state: low match (in state)
Purdue: low match
Drexel: safety
U of Illinois: high match to low reach (mid 50 ACT around 31-34 depending on major)

I think you have a great chance for Georgia Tech and are definitely competitive for Berkeley and Michigan. I’m sure the legacy status helps at cornell especially since you also have the stats to back it up. Another school you might consider is the Colorado School of Mines. Ive heard its great for engineering especially since they basically only offer engineering degrees. Also they are ranked pretty high for undergrad engineering.

Just want to add that the admission rate at UMich CoE has dropped down to 20% in 2014. It may drop further. For OOS, it is as hard as some Ivies.

UC Berkeley = Reach (Cal engineering had a 9% acceptance rate last year, lower for out of state)
University of Michigan = Low Match
GA Tech = Safety
Cornell (Legacy x2) = Match
CMU-(non-com sci) = Match
Penn Sate- University Park and Schreyers (In state) = Safety
Purdue = Safety
Drexel = Safety
University of Illinois = Safety

I am assuming you will get 34-35 on ACT retake. Definitely retake it.

@puzzled123 Do you mean low reach for University of Michigan? It cannot be a low match at as both GPA and ACT are just at the admission average while the admission rate is 20% or below.

No, I meant low match. Like I said, I am assuming a 34-35 on retake. His GPA is 4.0 in the eyes of U Mich- they don’t consider +, -, or freshman year. He has 6 APs senior year, and a comp public school. U Mich shouldn’t be very hard at all.

As you can see, U Mich averages are pretty low:

http://www.collegedata.com/cs/data/college/college_pg01_tmpl.jhtml?schoolId=379

Engineering is higher, but shouldn’t be a problem for OP.

@puzzled123 Even the OP did not say he expect to get 34-35 in retake. Even with 34-35 in ACT would not be a low match unless for in state. You are looking at out dated and inaccurate data. Note that the admission data on collegedata is based on their 331 members submitted results, not the real admission stat from the school. Also the applicant data and admission rate are not current there.
The average admission GPA was 3.85 for UMich overall in 2014, not 3.72. Also ACT 30 is the 25th percentile for UMich overall, not average admission. For UMich CoE, the average admission ACT this year was 33 with a 20% admission rate (was 30% in 2013). Don’t rely on the collegedata info for chancing. They are totally off. You should look at the official website. Indeed, the UMich CoE is getting as competitive as some Ivies for OOS students. If you think the UMich admission average is low, you are not reading the right data.

Interesting- but OP does have a 33, and if he retakes, ill be surprised if he doesn’t get at least a 34. And GPA is the most important factor, and OP has straight A’s 9-11.

And evaluation for U Mich is very different from the Ivies. One of the reasons that ivies are such a crapshoot are that numbers only open the doors in the process, not grant admission. Public schools run formulas on numbers, and that usually makes most of the admission decision (at least if the U Mich process is anything like the UC’s). So at an Ivy, if you have the average numbers, your chance is around the acceptance rate. At a public, if you meet the average numbers, you probably have a pretty good chance at admission.

I am talking about the CoE for OOS would be as hard as applying to some Ivies. Not the school overall. Note that there are 42% OOS students at UMich. Having GPA 4.0 is great and UMich does value that a lot. As a matter of fact, 21% of enrolled freshmen have GPA 4.0 this year. There are GPA 4.0 ACT 35 students rejected at UMich every year. Just look at the result posts. It is interesting to see someone factor in something OP did not even mention. OP’s current ACT is actually 32.75. Improvement is possible but not guaranteed, particularly OP is not so sure about retaking yet.
Note that what you describe about public college is probably true where the admission rate is high. For UMich CoE with admission rate at 20% or lower this year, plenty of students got rejected with around the admission average stat particularly for OOS. If they accept everyone with stat above admission average, they will need around 3 times the class size. You do need to aim at the 75th percentile or above for a better chance. The lower stat is filled mostly by the in state students, legacy, recruited athletes, etc.
