I’m applying to CSOM

For BC, subject tests are optional I think–I would double check the admissions website. Can you just send the 2 including the Korean? or send none.

you could send all 3 subject test scores. a lower chem score may not be as much of an issue for CSOM. I would send updated scores if you do retake in January. CSOM is really competitive and as ScottJ says, you need to really show your passion for business in your application.

Dear yaomingho : In order to understand the role of the SAT I/SAT II exams in the evaluation process of your application, take a few minutes to review either the full text available at the Boston College web site on the admissions process …

Now, some thoughts about your credentials as expressed in your summary profile. First and foremost, concern should be flagged about the critical reading score of 630 (low end score) and the view that your essays were great. Without reviewing the essay personally, we will have to accept your evaluation of great, but the critical reading score might imply that your connective thoughts in your free form writing might be somewhat disjointed for some readers. Have you had your essay reviewed by a trusted teacher?

A weak counselor recommendation, due to the fact that your counselor does not know you well, could also represent a gap in your profile. Hopefully, your counselor was able to share more than a bullet list of activities and could actually explain your involvement with your High School.

Obviously, chemistry is not your passion.

Your unweighted GPA at 3.5 is low and usually not a top 10% figure. (As a general point, there are numerous students on college confidential who post that their schools do not rank the graduating class. While you might not personally get a numerical ordering handed to you, be aware that such a ranking does always exist. Your High School, as part of their academic profile forwarded with your transcript, will typically send data like the “Top 5% had averages above X”, the “Top 10% had averages above Y” and so forth. It is in your best interest to be aware of this data. All too often, students believe that they are in the top of their class or that such data does not matter but when highly selective schools review their application, the candidate turns out to be only first or second quartile, not Top 5-10%.)

Based on your data, BC does feel like a stretch school for your application - your class average, rank, and standardized test scores in spots are average. You would be well placed to look for a couple of safer options to back up your bid for Boston College.

what are some ways i can show them my interest in business? first of all, no essays are required for bc so i cant show them that way… or can i send them a letter? no business/econ sats are available…

To show your interest you could add information in the common app “additional information” section. You could put something there about your intestets in business and other things that you have done.

Have you taken the ACT with writing? I think if you take that you don’t have to send subject tests to BC since it covers several areas.

If your grades are improving a lot in junior and senior year, you may want to comment on that in the additional info. It seems some students (often boys) struggle their first year in high school then figure it out sophomore year on. If you can show that your GPA is really solid after that type of period, it may help your application, but it does seem that BC really likes to see GPAs in the top 10% AND high test scores. If you don’t have those things, you need to create a compelling reason for the school to have you on campus.
