(Chance Me) UC Berkeley-Computer Science L&S

Hey CC,

I will be applying to UC Berkeley among many others this November. I was just hoping to get feedback as to my chances!

I am still working on my personal statement.

Well, that’s all the information I can think of right now. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thank you!

I’m also a prospective L&S CS applicant but I’m going to be applying next year.

My concern is if you can handle a courseload of 21 units for this semester and the next semester. You’ve got quite the history of dropping classes and such and you were taking a lighter courseload then. I’d suggest looking into if you can still take a couple of the breadth ge’s for P/NP. Verify before you try that though.

I can’t offer much advice than suggesting you write a killer personal statement. That’s going to be what pulls you up because from what anecdotal understanding I have about L&S CS the average GPA is around 3.9 something so you would be on the low end here. Your first semester grades will have a huge impact on your admissions to power through and aim for a 4.0 this fall.

I’d also advise you to post in the UC Transfer forum, located here: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/uc-transfers/

Good luck!

@Orangered123 Hey, Thanks for replying.

yeah I was not a serious student my first 2 years of CC. But I have improved in the past year and I hope the admissions see my trend in the grades.

I also hope that the admissions see that I have taken 3 Physics courses, Chemistry, 3 Engineering courses, and a Speech course. I believe many of these courses are not even part of the requirement to take at CC to go to UCB’s CS L&S.

I am for sure not dropping any classes the next 2 semesters.

I am taking 4 classes the next 2 semesters for P/NP, I think they allow 14 units max for classes that are not major requirements.

Where did you hear about the 3.9 GPA ?

“Your first semester grades will have a huge impact on your admissions to power through”
Can you clarify this statement.

The average gpa of the people admitted into UCLA’s Computer Science program is at a 3.88 (https://www.admissions.ucla.edu/prospect/adm_tr/Tr_Prof14_mjr.htm#SEAS) Berkeley should be slightly higher than that by a couple of points at the least.

You have to update your application in January with your fall semester grades so they can look at those too. A lot is going to ride on how well you do in this semesters classes.
