Hey I'm a sophomore at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign but having second thoughts here and contemplating a transfer. UC-Berkley is my dream school, and I just wanted to know where i stand.

I had a 3.26 first semester
and a 3.85 last semester

I have a 3.61 overall with some classes I took in high school for credit. I'm a member of the rugby team here and the Phi Eta Sigma Honor fraternity as well as Pre-Law Club and the Pre-Law Honors Society. I stand to get good grades this semester but will Berkley look at this? My high school did not rank but I had a 4.0 weighted and a 32 ACT 12 writing. Please if anyone can help at all it would be greatly appreciated! Thank you. Also if UC-Berkley is too much of a stretch what other schools would be a move upward from Illinois that would be within my reach? Thanks!

Its Berkeley…

I say your chances aren’t good.

It’s truly going to be a crapshoot at UCB. Make sure you write a great personal statement.

i’d say you have a chance. worst case scenario you apply and don’t get in, and then you’re in the same position you are now. UCB seems to like people that are involved on campus and look at “the whole package,” not just a student’s gpa. you seem to be involved but of course they also like to see that your doing something in your club/etc and aren’t just a member. also i’ve heard they look to see if you’ve taken any classes related to your major that aren’t required instead of solely determining everything based off of your gpa. the personal statement will be key though.

Chances are a bit low, majorly due to the fact that you’re an out of state transfer student. If you were a CCC or UC student then priority would be given to you for transferring. But don’t let this stop you from still applying, it’s still worth a shot. Don’t want to say that you never tried.

Also note that UC’s don’t consider HS past performance for transfer admissions.

Out-of-State transfer rates were 20% for 2009. Obviously not high, but still not impossible.

You would have a chance with really compelling personal statements. Definitely need to convey why Berkeley is the place for you, your interest in a specific major / college, and clear career goals and how you will use your education to reach them. Also try to convey what is unique about you, e.g. what you would contribute to the campus.

It’s worth a try! I think your level of campus involvement is interesting, considering you have second thoughts about your school. At least it shows you really tried to find your place there and explore your situation before deciding the environment isn’t right for you.

Regarding your GPA, schools do look at improvement, so the 3.85 last semester looks good! Berkeley WILL look at your Fall grades, in an update form you fill out next year.

Finally, UCs DO look at transfers’ high school transcripts, test scores, and other academic or sports involvement. I think it would help if you look like a candidate they could have admit straight out of high school…you just didn’t apply and now realize the error of your ways. :)

Good luck!

Look into Brown, Rochester, NYU.

what’s your major?

overall you are a pretty mediocre applicant but given that you’re out of state, I would say that you’re a weak applicant.

Seriously, out of state applicants should not look into transferring to a UC just because its much harder to get into than a private school of greater prestige.

^ That is not true. The only schools that are easier to transfer into, that are ranked ahead of UCB, are Northwestern and Cornell. A 20% admitted rate is hardly impossible to overcome.

My major is International Studies with a focus on Eastern Europe and Russia.

35% chance…that’s being generous
