Hopefully my GPA doesn’t hurt me for both campuses.

Overall GPA:4.0

I am an international student. I’m taking Cal 2 right now but thinking of dropping it due to the fact that I would get a B in class. Do you guys think I should do it.
I think I am a very competitive applicant as long as I get all As this semester. What else can I do to improve my application? Please be honest

Overall GPA: 3.63 Current (3.75 if I get all A’s this semester)
Major: Political Science for both UCB and UCLA
Pre-requisites: All done by the end of the semester
IGETC: Finished by the end of the semester
TAP: Yes for UCLA
ECs: SMC honors program, Phi Theta Kappa member, Ive interned for 2 political campaigns during this past summer/semester. One was for a mayor that ran for state senate, and another that was a current state senator who ran for US congress. Throughout high school i was a competitive rower and was team captain my senior year.
Personal Statement: I’m a pretty strong writer, I’ve finished my first essay and its gotten great reception.
Extra notes: I think i have the ability to attain all A’s this semester, but I’m scared that I am not as competitive as the other applicants. Can someone please let me know if i have a chance for UCLA and Berkeley? I’ve heard that another idea would be to apply as a rhetoric major as it is very un impacted and it goes hand in hand with Political Science.

Try hard for that 3.75, because it will put you in excellent position for the major. Also, your ECs are great and having TAP is a big plus. Good luck!

TAP will make you a very strong candidate for admission in addition to your GPA(For UCLA, anyway). TAP is extremely helpful, and your ECs and PS are great.

I think you have a good chance at both Berkeley and UCLA. Keep up your grades, too.

Overall GPA: 3.76 (as of now)
Major/UC GPA: 3.63 (Political Science), 4.0 (Soc, for the moment)
Major: Planning on double majoring in Political Science and Sociology, though since I can only choose one I’ll probably go with Soc (more information below)
Pre-requisites: Done for polisci, need 2 more for soc which I’ll complete by Spring
Transferring from: UCR
Transferring to: Cal, UCLA
ECs: SAVE (Sexual Assault and Violence Education), volunteering at the Riverside Rape Crisis center, National Society of Collegiate Scholars.
Conferences and work I’ve done/participated in: Students of Color Conference 2014, paid internship at the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission Summer 2013 (right before freshman year).
Personal statements:
Why I want to do my major(s): I had a sociology/economics/political science teacher in high school that really impacted me, and if it weren’t for him I don’t think I’d be where I am now.
Describe a quality/accomplishment/event/whatever that’s really important to you: I want to write either about my living situation when I lived with my parents (more below) and my introduction to punk which prompted a rebellion against the standards set for me and my peers, as well as an interest in those with ‘troubled’ lives and a willingness to help them, or my love for writing which helped me deal with my depression and a couple of other mental illnesses I have. I also thought about writing about my time at the Student of Color Conference at Merced, and how it really helped me accept myself as being a mixed student and that it’s okay not to fit in a box. Thoughts?
Extra notes:
As of Fall 2014, I am in University Honors. During Spring quarter, a political science professor I had had the whole year invited me to take his upper division course on European Politics, which is what I’m really interested in studying and part of the reason why I’m interested in transferring (unless you have upperclassman status (90+ units), freshmen and sophomores cannot take upper division courses at UCR. I ended up with an A- in the class.).
I’m divided between applying as a polisci or soc major. I’m really passionate about sociology and have a better major GPA, but politics also really interests me and I have more ECs to go with it. What do you all think?
Other random information: I went to French primary/secondary school in the US and have dual citizenship. My ties to the French Community in the Bay Area (where I grew up) aren’t that strong but left a really big impact. Upper middle class status, but lifestyle outside education doesn’t really reflect that (this isn’t a matter of my parents wanting to keep all their money: since my brother and I went to private school, rent in San Francisco is outrageous (we’ve been living in the same two bedroom apartment since we/my parents came to the Bay 19 years ago), and various several thousand dollar medical bills, there was only so much money left to spend on vacations and designer clothing aka none at all).
I’m also super interested in pursuing Nordic Studies, which both UCLA and Cal over, due to my love of Finland. I’m currently trying to learn as much Finnish as I can during my free time, and listen to a lot of music as a way to help me learn. Would this be a point worth pushing in the supplemental essay?
Thank you so much!
