Chance Me: UCB /UCLA - post your stats here

@RustyShacklefurd, Your GPA is too low for Cal/UCLA, but you have some good ECs. I would definitely do more ECs though. Make sure you do stuff you like though! Although Cal cares about the personal statement more than UCs, they still care about your GPA even more especially for transfers. The Ws will hurt too. The unspoken rule is 3 Ws maximum. If your goal is to go to Cal/UCLA, stay at CC longer and increase your GPA.

@Cayton I have a question, when UCs are calculating our transfer GPA, would they include our fall grades? or even winter grades?

@jason861101‌

You update your UC application with Fall grades in Januaryand, if applicable, Winter grades, so yeah, they consider them.

Overall GPA: 3.87, 3.89 after Fall (if I receive all A’s)
Major GPA: I believe it will be a 3.88 after Fall. I received 1 B out of all the major prep(Calc 3). Not sure how to calculate. I just looked at the courses listed on assist.
Major: Mechanical or Electrical Engineering (I haven’t decided which one)
Pre-requisites: Done by spring
IGETC: Yes
TAP: No
ECs: Some tutoring and babysitting, some volunteering during and after high school
Personal Statement: Not exactly sure what i’m going to write about. I feel like this is what will make or break me.
Extra notes: I am female and Mexican/Filipino. Also, 1 W that I’m retaking this Fall.

Major: Psychology
Overall GPA: 3.739
Major GPA: 3.5~3.75
Pre-requisites: Will be done by Spring 2015
IGETC: Will be done probably by Fall 2014, but if not, Spring 2015
TAP: Yes, but only to UCLA
EC’s:

  • Part-time as a receptionist/assistant in an office of trained psychologists and psychiatrist who deal with patients who have ADHD and other accompanying mental disorders for at least a year
  • Scholar for the APIASF/Wells Fargo (Asian & Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund) Scholarship
  • 150+ community service hours
  • Past team captain positions + national awards in martial arts
  • Awarded for an annual Japanese speech contest (spoke about my future plans/passion for Psychology)
  • Held several leadership positions in Key Club and in my Japanese school student council
    Personal Statement:
Prompt 1: Focus on being interested in psychology since high school, the details in between, and my job. Long story short, I am honestly driven to understand and help those around me
Prompt 2: My family is in a way very divided and most of the ‘bonding’ that I’ve had is only with my mother. A lack of communication pushed me to be my own leader and more responsible. Mostly everything I’ve done up to this point is due to my own accord.
Extra notes: Japanese American, turning 18 soon, part-time student from sophomore year to senior year of high school, was a student in Japanese school from kindergarten till senior year.

Please let me know what you think.
Thank you in advance!

@sagemeadow, looks good to me but exactly what kind of volunteering did you do and how much time did you put into it? I think your GPA is great, but remember that admitted mechanical and electrical engineers at ucla have an avg of 3.91. (Cal is probably more or less the same, they don’t make this info available). You’re really really close so you’re good, but you have to have a good personal statement. You can’t really increase your ECs since you’re almost transferring but just use good descriptions for the EC section. Overall, you have a really great chance :)

@psychky, Since psych is an impacted major, your GPA puts you in a “middleish” spot, in where you might get in and you might not. However, being in TAP really helps so I think it offsets your average GPA (according to Ms.Sun, TAP increases your GPA by a few pts in the selection process). Your ECs are excellent  Your prompts seem great, just make sure they’re written well. I’m a psych major too and your stats are very similar to mine. Overall, I’m 99% sure you’ll get in to UCLA. For Cal, I think you’ll get in if your personal statements are good.

Major: L&S Computer Science

Units Completed: 81 by Spring
Overall GPA: 3.815
Major GPA: 3.78
B’s in Calc 2, English, and a 2 unit Unix Class.

Fall 2014 Schedule: Aiming to get a 4.0 to compensate for poor spring 2014 performance.
General College Chem 1
Linear Algebra
Multi-Var Calculus

Pre-requisites: Done by Spring 2015. No Physics for UC LA. Will have 2 sem of Gen College Chem.
IGETC: Possibly by Spring. Only missing life science.
TAP: Yes UC Berkeley

EC’s:
-Web-design contractor for a startup. Work from home on my own hours when I have to do work.
-Content Creator for an SF Events Group. Help host weekly events with around 600+ attendees and 1k+ virtual presence via live streams. Also an official Twitch stream partner because of strong audience.
-InterClubCouncil Rep for Bits n Bytes Technology club on campus.
-1 month summer development internship at a Startup.
-Planning on joining Alpha Gamma Sigma National Honors Society
-Regional Manager for a non profit organization with the task of organizing a hackathon high school/college students.

Awards:
-Most Useful Application at a Hackathon (Aprox 3rd place)

Other:
-I’m on DSS(Disability Support Services) due to a chronic disease I have. Nothing life threatening.

Personal Statement:
Prompt 1: Probably going to write about my experience in the tech world within the last year and how it has reassured what I want to do with my life. Not 100% sure.
Prompt 2: Not 100% sure about what I will write about. Might talk about my time in Iran during the last revolution

Note: I fear my poor spring 2014 may hurt my chances when it comes to admissions this year. Aiming to get a 4.0 this fall. At worst I expect to get a 3.6 which would be one B.
Also does anyone know how much TAP actually helps?
I’m also mostly concerned with UC Berkeley and know I have a relatively low chance of getting into LA because I lack the Physics Pre-Req.

UCB Major: Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
UCLA Major: Computer Science

Overall GPA: 4.0
Major GPA: 4.0

Pre-requisites: I will have all the prerequisites for UCLA. UCB will be different. I will only have complete my community college’s verision of 61B. I don’'t know how much this is going to hurt me.

TAP: Yes UC Berkeley

EC’s: I haven’t done many. I’ve been a math tutor at my CC, and I have also competed in a hackathon, but that is pretty much it.

Thank you so much @randombookie
If anyone else can give more feedback that would be very helpful!

@psychky‌ everything looks good but your GPA is iffy for an impacted major. UCLA is turning more holistic, which could help, but truth is, none of us can really say what they will do. I say it’s 50-50. I know you don’t want to hear that. Make your PS as strong as possible.

I do now see you’re in TAP, which I assume raises your chances a fair amount.

@lindyk8 Yeah I’m hoping that this year’s holistic review approach will benefit me because I understand I don’t have the best GPA in the world, but maybe my list of EC’s will help me out.
Thanks for reminding me that I’m not a shoe-in for UCLA because that’ll just make me lose motivation :((

No one is ever a “shoe-in”, even if they’re 4.0. There are so many variables: calculating AP credit differently then the UC, taking courses out of sequence, courses with different units (mix of semester and quarter) from different colleges. Maybe they are only admitting 12 students and 100 have 4.0 GPA.

When you’re borderline that’s when the PS has the most impact. It could be the straw that tips the scales. So - no pressure.

Good luck!

Thank you! You’re right, at this point the only thing I can really do to increase my chances is to try and perfect my PS.

Overall GPA: 3.59 Current (3.72 if I get all A’s)
Major GPA: 3.8 Current (3.9 if all A’s)
Major: Math/Econ for UCLA, Math for UCB
Pre-requisites: All done by fall except 2 (one not offered at school)
IGETC: Finish by end of Fall
TAP: Yes
ECs: Board member on a club, PTK, MAT, ASG, Honors Program, Community Service Award, may be a math and English tutor at my college
Personal Statement: Have yet write, but I am a strong writer and have an English prof who is helping me
Extra notes: Currently taking 22 units, took 12 over summer, took 20 over spring. Hopefully they see that I can handle a crazy workload. Worked 25 hours a week for a two semesters.

Let me know and please be honest! I feel so borderline even though I have TAP, but I don’t want to trust it.

Also, for my second choice of major, I was thinking of applying Biz-Econ, but I feel like I’m too far behind the GPA to get in, even with TAP. Also, I feel like I should apply as just a math for my second because it is a much more useful major being that it covers a ton of fields. Any suggestions on this? Can I switch between math.econ and math if I choose to? Thanks!

@uclaplz You are probably in for both if you keep up the good math grades. Avg GPA for math at UCLA is around 3.5, just make sure you finish Calc 1-3 and either linear algebra or differential equations.

And yes, you can change to any of the maths from Math/Econ. You can’t apply for Biz Econ as an alternate though because it is highly impacted. Just apply for another math major as your backup, but you should get in either way.

@uclaplz‌

With TAP on your side, you should be able to get in for math/econ at UCLA. Berkeley’s a different story, though. It’ll be harder there.

Your ECs are good, and having an English professor help you with your personal statement will help even more.

You can’t list biz econ as your second major since it’s extremely impacted(Maybe you can list it, but you definitely won’t be considered for admission into it if it’s your second-choice major). You certainly can list math as your second major, though.

If you get in at UCLA, you’ll probably be able to switch from math/econ to math, but that’s really at the discretion of the math department.

Thanks guys! I knew Berkeley would be a long shot, but I’m glad my outlook for LA is looking good because that’s my number 1. Hope you’re enjoying it there @Cayton! :stuck_out_tongue: Also thanks for the response @CSB111

@uclaplz‌

I haven’t started school at UCLA yet, but I will soon, and I can’t wait. I hope you get in at UCLA next year.

Ok. Don’t tell me my chances for UCLA, I know they are slim. Just tell me if you think I should bother paying for the application, i.e. do I have a shot at all?

I’m putting as much info here as I can to help your decision making. Tl,dr: 27 yo female chem-e major, 3.02 GPA at first CC w/awful grades, 3.75 GPA at second California cc attempt, avg 3.46 b/t the two. Big upward trend. Major GPA (pre-req’s from assist) is 3.8. Work 30hr/week in customer service as a supervisor, No “clubby” ECs, but I do make and sell craft goods from home, and have devoted much of my past 2 years to personal fitness and health, losing a grip of weight and educating myself on healthy living.
