Was looking around and just wanted to see where I stand compared to others, looking for other schools I should consider too! Please don’t repeat exactly what’s read on each schools’ websites-- I’d like to know YOUR thoughts from personal experience or people you know based on my stats
Stats:
From Wilton High School, CT (Ranked 10th in the state and 439th in the country)
GPA: 3.4 starting my senior year (School does weight GPAs)
ACT: 27
Essay: 9
Earned primarily A’s, some B’s, and 2 C’s (both were in electives :/)
I took APUSH (11th grade) and APLang and Comp (12th grade) and dropped out of AP Micro/Macro (12th grade–so it’s considered incomplete)
Side note: Not sending AP scores b/c (3) on APUSH and APLang and Comp will be taken after I’m accepted
Kind of depending on my ECs and my Common App. essay:
The essay is about coming out on Halloween–if anyone wants to read I’ll share later!
Listed as follows: Club/(grades participated)/role
Yearbook Club (11)(12) President/Chief Editor

Schools Applied to:
Ratios for accepted to applied from WHS in the past 3 years:
UCLA (6/33)
UCSB (4/21)
UCI (3/8)
UCDavis (6/12)
LMU/LA (3/13)
American University (Legacy if that means anything) (16/51)
Boston University (39/122)
UVermont (82/124)
UMaine (28/38)
CU-Boulder (31/62)
UMass Amherst (33/69)
UConn (236/413)
Pitt (17/26)
Personally, I don’t think I have too good of a chance at any of the UC’s, BU is a stretch, and Pitt is iffy but the rest seem pretty fitting? Would love to hear feedback as to what you guys think my chances are and if there are any other schools you think I should consider applying to.
Thanks
Do you know the stats of the students at your school who were accepted? Are you in the range? I think you have a shot at Pitt, Vermont, Maine, and Colorado if your stats are similar to those at your school who got in. If I were you I would have done ED to American since you have legacy and they take a lot of students in that round. If you didn’t do ED it will be harder.
The stats of the students accepted are almost all the around mine except for UC Davis, UCLA, and UCSB (kind of).
For the schools, I applied to, according to Naviance, the only ones I’m not considered “in the range” or “worthy enough” for are as follows: UCLA, UCI, and UCDavis. I’m in the right range for accepted applicants from my high school to the rest of the schools on my list.
I didn’t really want to ED to American because I liked it but not enough to completely commit to it. It’s super pricey and I don’t know if it’s worth it.
Also Lemme clarify, my school DOES NOT weight GPAs
Then it is likely that you will have some choices when all is said and done:) Good luck. Your ECs are great, btw. If you want to add any schools then maybe add some smaller schools that tend to be holistic with admissions. They would appreciate the ECs.
Keep in mind that the UCs are ridiculously expensive for out-of-state students. @Gumbymom can help you figure that out more than I can.
UC’s offer little to no financial aid for OOS students and your stats will not put in the top 1-2% for the chance at any merit scholarships like Regents so expect to pay $65K/year or $260K for 4 years to attend.
UC’s only consider 10-11th grades in their GPA calculation and will cap your extra honors points (weighting) to 8 semesters of AP/IB courses taken during this time. https://rogerhub.com/gpa-calculator-uc/
If your UW GPA is 3.4, then the maximum UC capped weighted GPA you could get would be a 3.7-3.8. This is below the averages for the majority of the UC’s and below all the UC’s you have listed along with a low ACT score.
Here is some statistical data for the UC’s and not major specific.
Freshman admit rates for UC GPA of 3.40-3.79:
UCB: 1.8%
UCLA: 2.2%
UCSD: 7.2%
UCSB: 10.1%
UCI: 11.1%
UCD: 16.6%
UCSC: 43.8%
UCR: 63.3%
UCM: 88.7%
Freshman admit rates for UC GPA of 3.80-4.19:
UCB: 12.6%
UCLA: 11.7%
UCSD: 38.7%
UCSB: 53.6%
UCD: 56.5%
UCI: 52.1%
UCSC: 75.7%
UCR: 90.1%
UCM: 96.1%
2018 UC capped weighted GPA averages:
UCB: 4.23
UCLA: 4.23
UCSD: 4.16
UCSB: 4.13
UCI: 4.13
UCD: 4.11
UCSC: 3.96
UCR: 3.81
UCM: 3.71
25th - 75th percentiles for ACT:
UCB: 30-35
UCLA: 31-35
UCSD: 28-34
UCSB: 28-34
UCD: 26-33
UCI: 26-33
UCSC: 26-32
UCR: 22-30
UCM: 19-26
I highly recommend unless you have an unlimited budget and target UC Santa Cruz and Riverside, the UC application will be a waste.
Best of luck and consider the UC’s for graduate if you that is in your future.
Thank you for the feedback. I’ll definitely keep in mind UCs for graduate school!
