Hey everybody,
I’m a senior from North Carolina applying to several in state schools, one of which is UNC Chapel Hill. I know that the competition will be high for admission, so I was hoping to get some input from you.

I recently got deferred from Tulane which made me a bit paranoid about the my UNC chances. Please be honest with my chances so I can best expect what the result might be.
Thank you!
Any “hooks” (e.g., URM, first-generation, D-1 athletic potential, etc.)? Any positions of leadership in your ECs?
Also, Tulane defers lots of people, especially if you haven’t visited the campus; so don’t take it personally.
Leadership:
Elected Historian of NLHS
Treasurer of Ultimate Frisbee Club
Secretary of Sports Statistics and Culture Club
As for hooks, I don’t really have any. I’m a Caucasian male, both my parents attended college, and I’m fairly athletic but not good enough for D-1.
I do have some interesting awards, though.
I won second place in the state sight reading competition for Latin at UNC last year.
I placed 13th at Regionals for diving Sophomore year.
I’m nationally certified for core construction.
I earned cum laude on the National Latin Exam.
As for work experience (which I’m not sure will help too much)
I was a tennis coach at my pool for 3 years
I stocked concessions and priced goods at the snack bar
My major was Psychology (BS) and minor was Classics (Latin and Greek studies)
I have a strong letter of recommendation from my Latin teacher
I hope this extra information helps, and thank you for the quick reply!
You may be able to get an idea of where you place relative to recently admitted students by looking at the UNC-CH Common Data Set: Part C9 of the CDS gives the median 50% for both SAT and ACT scores, as well as the percentage of the entering first-year class falling within certain ranges of SAT and ACT scores; Part C11 gives the percentage of entering first-year students falling within a range of unweighted GPA on a 4.0 scale, and Part C12 gives the average high school GPA of first-year applicants.
The CDS also tells you, under Part C7, that standardized test scores, application essay(s), letter(s) of recommendation, and the rigor of your high school record are “very important” academic factors considered for freshman admission, whereas GPA and class rank are “important” academic factors considered for freshman admission. Extracurricular activities, talent, and character/personal qualities are considered as “very important” non-academic factors.
Your ACT score is in the middle of the mid-50%, and your GPA is very good. While I think that you are competitive for admission as an in-state student, it may well come down to the quality of your essays and LORs, which are “very important” admissions factors.
I don’t know whether your high school has Naviance or any similar program that gives information about how students at your high school have done in applying to UNC-CH; if so, you might peruse that data. That, or speak with a guidance counselor at your school, since he/she could probably give you some insight into how students from your high school have done in UNC-CH admissions.
Best of luck to you.
