GPA: 3.8 (Our scale is strange…we don’t have a weighted or un-weighted GPA)
ACT: I took it blind for the first time and got a 27…hope to get it up to a 30.

About me: I am a white female at an all girls’ college preparatory school in Memphis, TN. My dad didn’t go to college and my parents are divorced. I’m not sure if this counts for any sort of diversity thing, but my grandparents immigrated here in the late 40s trying to escape communism in Greece.

Although my grades aren’t all too great, I think I am very strong in my EC activities. I’m trying to consider what colleges to apply to, and I don’t know where to begin. I want to get out of the south and either go to New England or the Pacific Northwest. What colleges should I apply to? Do I have a good chance at scholarships?

These are my top choice as of right now:

  1. NYU --REACH
  2. George Washington University --REACH
  3. American University --TARGET?
  4. U of Washington -Seattle --TARGET?
  5. UNC Asheville --SAFETY
  6. Eugene Lang --SAFETY
  7. Pace University --SAFETY
    THANK YOU SO MUCH

BUMP :frowning:

first off, you will most likely not get a scholarship at NYU because they’re very stingy with FA. I think your classifications are pretty accurate. My advice to you is to look at the common data set for the colleges you want to go to and see how you match up. You’re right–your ECs are really strong but your grades could be better. What’s important is that you took the most rigorous course possible at your school. If you’re looking for colleges in the New England region, I would suggest looking at Mount Holyoke or Smith–both are women’s colleges.

If you’re worried about tuition, look at schools that meet full needs. Wish you luck!

You are very correct in that your EC’s are fantastic, but your grades and test scores could be a lot better. Make sure to stress your school involvement and EC’s when applying. What is your intended major?

Based on your current ACT score of a 27, this is the most reasonable assessment I can give. Try as hard as you can to get your ACT up to a 30/31+ for NYU. They are not very cooperative with FA also, which may not help you.

My brother just graduated from GW, so I feel I can give you a lot of solid info on that school. Applying EARLY to GW is your best bet. Their early admission rates are considerably higher than their regular admissions. I saw someone in my school get in with the SAME ACT of 27 as you. They applied early. If GW is your top choice, I suggest you do too. If you have other questions regarding GW feel free to message me too.

These are my top choice as of right now:

  1. NYU - High Reach
  2. George Washington University ED - High Match/Low Reach, RD - Mid Reach
  3. American University - High Match
  4. U of Washington -Seattle - Low Reach (ACT of 29+ would help)
  5. UNC Asheville - Match
  6. Eugene Lang - Safety
  7. Pace University - Safety

Chance me back as well? Thanks!

I think you have a decent chance. Your ACT score is a bit too low, however. If you can increase it up to a 32, you’ll be in a much better position. Your extracurriculars are excellent so nothing to worry about there. Make sure you stress your extracurricular involvement since that’s your biggest strength. You have a lot of B’s in your transcript and that will hurt too :(.
Consider other schools similar to NYU, like Fordham, Colgate, Barnard, etc.
NYU - High Reach

  1. George Washington University ED - Hopefully you'll get in.
  2. American University - You're okay for American University
  3. U of Washington -Seattle - Increase your ACT and I think you'll make it.
  4. UNC Asheville - You should make it in.
  5. Eugene Lang - Safety
  6. Pace University - Safety

  6. Eugene Lang -- safety
  7. Pace University -- safety

your ECs are great, but your grades and test scores are nothing too amazing, just like me ;P…

if you get that ACT past 30 you will be in great shape.
