Chance Me! Yale, Georgetown, UCLA, USC, UNC, NYU, GWU

I know that my resume has some weak spots but I'm hoping that some of my EC's and a solid interview can give me a shot!

White Female - Upper Middle-Class - Public High School
GPA UW - 3.56 (estimate, I live in Texas and my school only produces weighted GPAs)
GPA W - 5.25
ACT - 33 (35S, 33R, 33E, 29M) Will retake in October to improve math score.
Not submitting SAT scores.
SATII - I will be taking 3 in October most likely either WH or USH, Math II, and possibly Lit. Hopefully my scores will be 700+ on all 3.
Rank - 40/479

The reason my UW GPA is so low is due to the fact that my school is on an extremely competitive weighted system that makes it almost impossible for competitive students to take a rigorous courseload and still have a 3.9+ GPA, in fact, I don't believe that anyone in the top 10% of my class could possibly have an unweighted GPA higher than a 3.9.

Freshman year = PAP Geometry, PAP Gifted English, AP Human Geo, Spanish I (no honors offered), Theater I (had to fill art credit), PAP Biology, and Golf

Sophomore year = PAP Algebra II, PAP Gifted English, AP World History, Spanish II (no honors offered), PAP Computer Science, PAP Chemistry, and Golf

Junior year = PAP PreCalculus, AP Lang&Comp, AP USH, PAP Spanish III, AP Psychology, PAP Physics, and Golf

Senior year = AP Calculus AB, AP Literature, AP Government, AP Economics, AP Environmental Systems, AP Chemistry, Golf, and a period of senior release that I will use to learn Arabic on my own (I have no interest in continuing Spanish)

That is very near to the most rigorous courseload offered at my school.

ECs
- I have played golf all 4 years in a very competitive 5A district, lettered 3 years, All-District honors twice, Regional Qualifier twice, and hopefully a state qualifier next year
- I am the Senior President of my chapter of National Charity League
- Senior Class Council Historian, prom committee, and will be a distinguished student panel member (I get to sit on stage) at graduation next spring
- I am the current founder/President of the first Arabic Club at our school
- current member of National Honor Society and National Spanish Honor Society
- Freshman PTSA Student Representative
- 4 year Student Council Member
- President of Philosophy Club
- Chosen as a graduation usher for the Class of 2013 by administrators

My recommendations will come from teachers who see me as hard-working and interested in learning as well as the director of secondary schools in our district whom I have worked with closely since elementary school.

I am a very witty-person and I'm hoping that will give me an edge when it comes to my essays and interview. My english teachers have always enjoyed the satire I add to my essays so I am hoping that will make me stand out a little bit more.

I plan on pursuing International Relations/Political Science as well as Arabic in college. My extracurriculars are focused around leadership and service; I'm hoping that will shine through.

Honest opinions are welcomed and appreciated! Thank you!

Here’s my take on your chances
1.Retake the ACT (aim for a 34-36)
2. Don’t worry about GPA. If nobody get’s 3.9+ like you said, the adm. officers will NOT compare you to people from other schools but will look at the context of the school.
3. Your rank is borderline top 10% so it will pass
4. You have great leadership and not many highschoolers are commited to something like Arabic (hell I’m middle eastern and not even commited to it)

But your golden ticket to Yale (the rest of those schools you have a solid chance) may be your humor. If you can make those adm. officers laugh and take a liking to you, you’ll be guaranteed a spot because nothing in your application raises a red flag.

Start those essays now.

i think you should just try to bring your ACT up! that’s really the only thing I see here that could be improved! wishing you the best of luck!

I disagree with a number of things Marioandluigi writes, but this passage is patently overoptimistic and wrong. If you want to use humor or to show off your wit in your application, that is fine (though do so carefully), but it will in no way, shape, or form be a “golden ticket” or “guarantee” admission to Yale or other schools on your list. I’m not quite sure where Marioandluigi even got that sentiment in the first place.

I think you already know your weaknesses and strengths – and nobody except an admissions officer can accurately give “chances” – so I will avoid to do so here. However, I do want to briefly comment on your GPA: even though admissions officers will look at it from within the context of your school, a 3.56 GPA is very low and may be difficult to overcome for the most selective colleges on your list, particularly if your high school is typically noncompetitive. For a better picture of where you stand compared to admitted applicants from past years to each of these colleges, check their admissions websites or Google “[college name] admissions stats.” Most colleges provide a compiled list of statistics for the stats of their admitted class, and I think it’s a helpful resource that enables applicants to see where they stand. Good luck!

@Adodie

I was merely suggesting that OP be true to her personality. Since so much of an application comes down to the subjective feelings an officer gets, it would be important to come off as “real”. And she stated herself that 3.9+ gpa’s are extremely rare. Some schools have extreme grade deflation.

@Marioandluigi You are right. Grade deflation is a huge issue at a lot of Texas schools because of the different weighting systems. It is very difficult to take the most rigorous classes and still maintain a decent unweighted GPA. Thank you all for your comments and suggestions!

Hmmm, I would try to get a higher GPA, since your class rank and GPA seem lower than admission officers might want. Your ACT is pretty decent, on the bright side.

In regards to your EC’s, I congratulate you on your golf accomplishments, but other than that, it looks kind of barren. Yale is a high reach, Georgetown, UCLA, and USC are mid-low reaches, rest are high matches

Take what I say with a grain of salt though, I am only 16 and a rising senior.

By the way, could you chance me back? I would really appreciate it! ^_^

P.S. what is your handicap? :D

@lastspartan eh it’s only a 13, I’m really not that great - girls golf tends to not be as competitive as guys :)
