Chance me?

I accidentally posted this in the wrong place. How embarrassing.

In a nutshell...

For me, high school wasn’t exactly a...cake walk. At the beginning of freshman year, my mother got leukemia. I spent the majority of my time taking care of my brothers and mom. As a result, I didn’t have time to study during the day, so I stayed up each night until 3 a.m doing homework. My life was miserable; I juggled academics, family matters and extracurriculars on four hours of sleep.

Soon, I would add litigation to my load. During my sophomore year, my dad obsessively sued my mother for custody; she continually became sicker. She spent all of her time in court, not in a hospital. She couldn't work either; therefore, she was left destitute. My grades spiraled downward no matter how hard I worked, I’d always feel stressed out. It wasn't until the end of my junior year that things improved: my mom figured out a way to make money (selling small businesses to larger ones) so she was able to easily afford medicine and more legal fees.

My grades skyrocketed. Now, as a senior, I am earning a 4.3 weighted GPA (valedictorian has a 4.48), 3.8 UW. My marks didn’t go up because of a lack of stress–my mom works all the time, so I still have to take care of my brothers, and of course, my dad still attempts to get custody. I’ve just gotten better at handling anxiety; the only thing that has changed is me.

This is an explanation essay. I sent this to colleges. All of it is true and backed up by my counselor, except he went into more detail--my dad was abusive, a monster. (I am the second-worse case scenario he's seen in all his years here).

My GPA is now a 3.8W, which is slightly above average at my school. It doesn't rank, but it is exceedingly difficult (for safety issues, I won't say which school, but we're in the Top 10 in USA, Top 5 for college preparation). I have great test scores (a 32 ACT [35 English 34 Reading 32 Science 26 Math] [I've never gotten below a 4 on an AP exam], which seems to be the average here--CC is very overachieving!), fantastic extracurriculars…

…I chose three things that I was very passionate about--a very well-reputed newspaper which I am a copy editor and design editor for, I've won several awards. I founded a charity outreach program my sophomore year for a women's shelter, it's very successful, I create drives that raise hundreds of donations, etc. I am also a web editor for a foreign language magazine…

I am a part of American Mensa and three honor societies, but personally, I don't think any of those indicate intelligence.

I have worked three years at a financial company as a summer intern, I opened my own business as a private French teacher for young children, I tutor peers for the ACT. Additionally, I studied abroad last summer; here, I became fluent in French.

I always take the hardest classes FOR ME. I know that that might not be a smart move, but I only take courses that I think will be difficult. I didn't take AP French because all it is is translations––how are you supposed to learn a language without speaking it? I dropped an AP math class because it was a blow-off, I took pre-cal regular instead (even though it's regular, it's one of the hardest math classes at my school. It is my only B this year). I don't care what colleges think of this, high school is for learning. I need to know information to be prepared for college, it does me no good to have a high GPA and little knowledge.

I am a wonderful writer–this is not to be boastful, but all of my essays are incredibly strong. I know that they will stand out. I've seen my recommendations (accidentally), they are wonderful. I am sending three–one for my French teacher, English teacher, and guidance counselor.

I feel that I am a high-achieving student. I work hard, harder than you would know--I don't go to bed most nights until 3 a.m., I stay at the school until 8 p.m. most nights designing pages for newspaper, running my outreach program, etc.

I'm not putting what colleges I'm applying for, I feel like people would cut me down because I'm not in the top ten people. I know I can't get into Ivy League schools, I don't plan to--I just want to see where you think I am on the college spectrum.

xoxo

ADDED (ethnicity, personal life, and future plans): I am a pale female, brunette, with excellent taste in footwear. I am fluent in sarcasm, parseltongue and French, however my English isn't always up to par. I wish to double major in enigmatology and procrastination.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go study. Good night.

I think you have a very good chance at a lot of schools. Maybe not Ivies but definitely top state universities. (:

good luck !

“I am a wonderful writer–this is not to be boastful, but all of my essays are incredibly strong. I know that they will stand out.”

You write beautifully, as shown in your post, and have absolutely no doubt your essays WILL stand out. Your resiliency is fantastic. If you get to bed at 3 AM and tend to procrastinate, you and my son would get along perfectly. I’d look at “B+” colleges in the academic spectrum, making sure you have financial considerations worked out for some of the private schools and also include a public school or two in your home state.

Good luck!

Thank both of you!

I have a tendency to procrastinate, like now (I have an 89.4 in AP Econ, I need to memorize this vocabulary list to get a 100 tomorrow!) However, when I really need to work, I can.

What do you mean by B+ schools? I’ve gotten into Mizzou (for journalism, honors college), some of the schools (not necessarily the ones I’m applying to) my counselor suggested are Wake Forest, Carnegie Mellon and Vanderbilt. These, he said, would be my low reaches.

I live in ----, I’m not really interested in staying here. I applied to (top ten instate public college) and am told that (since I go to a competitive school), I could probably get in there.

It is a “match,” I think? I know a girl from my school last year that got in with a 3.6W GPA, 3.8W-4.0W seems to be average accepted.

… I like how the last couple of ECs you mentioned sounded super squeezed out.

Yeah, I’m just trying to give you basic info. If you want, I can PM you the online news story that is coming up about my club’s Christmas drive :)

I’m pretty active in school, but all of the stuff I do is because I want to do it.

Hmm…again….what are B+ schools? Do you mean Tulane, etc.?

Nightmares about schools

hey! i think you have a pretty good shot at many schools. you might want to consider applying to maybe one ivy as well. they will take into consideration the circumstances you’ve lived in and who knows? i think you definitely have a shot :)

PS. I like your writing too!! i wish i had your talent :)

also can you please chance me?

Please chance me for any or all of these schools. I was already accepted to Rutgers CAS Honors Program.

Boston University-match/low safety
Case Western Reserve University-safety
Drexel University-safety
Fordham University-safety
Johns Hopkins University-reach (low)
New York University-match
Northwestern University-reach
Tufts University-reach
University of Michigan*-high reach
University of Pennsylvania-high reach (all Ivies are!)

Tufts is a reach for everyone now, especially for overqualified applicants. They are sick of being viewed as a safety school, so they’ve gotten VERY random on who they reject.
*The only reason I say this is because Michigan wants a 4.0UW from OOS applicants. They don’t care as much about test scores, essays, etc.

I’m really nice when I chance, but I think you’re a good, strong candidate. :)

I say this as bluntly as I can: you’re an Asian with strong math scores. No one will expect you to write amazing essays! I wouldn’t worry so much about them, you sound like a great choice.

Can you chance me for….Chapel Hill? In North Carolina? It’s a beautiful school, I just applied, if you want to see my essay PM me.

OK, I’ve made a list of some schools. I don’t know which ones I’m apply to yet, I sent in all of my paperwork but not my payment yet. I want to decide which ones I really love.

North Carolina-Chapel Hill
Mizzou (already in!)
Vanderbilt
UT (instate student)
Georgetown
UGA
Washington & Lee

If you need to see my numbers, here you go:

Freshman year–3.4UW, 3.6W [This was when a bunch of !()U()!@E( happened. My mom got leukemia on my final exam for Biology, for example, so I failed it–I took it crying and stressed out.]
Sophomore year–3.4UW, 3.7W [I moved to my dad’s for a month. He emotionally abused me and tried to have me put in a mental hospital, among other things–locking my clothes in the garage, treating me like a dog, etc. When I escaped back to my mother, I was like a broken shell of a girl, miserable. I also had to make up 31 days of school work. Not telling colleges that, sorry, except for the part about making up everything and still doing somewhat well. I went to bed at 4 am every night and woke up at 5:30 to go to school, it was horrible.]
Junior year–3.5UW, 4.0W
Senior year–3.8UW, 4.3W

There are no Cs or Ds, just high Bs and As.

Look, the bottom line is: I don’t care how you view my grades. I didn’t crash and burn, I worked hard. I know I’ll be successful in college.

Test scores:
ACT (taken once)–32 composite
English: 35 [I missed one question! I was so angry, it was the one I went back and changed.]
Reading: 34
Science 32
Math: 26 [Not my strong suit]

I haven’t taken the SAT—have no intention to. I did take two subject tests: 700 in Literature, 680 in US History.

Course load:

I’ve taken…ten to fifteen AP classes, I think? Let’s be safe and say twelve. I only take classes I think are important, though, like I said before. You won’t catch me in AP Basketweaving. :X

I took five years of French, plan on majoring in either it, English, or Journalism. I love languages! I wanted to drop my lunch and take Spanish, but my counselor wouldn’t let me. Ugh.

Extracurriculars (hopefully these won’t seem squeezed out!):

I don’t want to give you a giant list of things I’ve done throughout high school, so I kept it to the three most integral to my life. Although I have many social and culture clubs–Hilites, French Club, etc., those are not what I spend the majority of my time on.

French Literary Magazine: Web Editor
L’Ecrivans en Herbe holds the most cultural significance for me. Through it, I’ve studied the structure and inner workings of the French language. I’m tempted to make French a bracket on its lonesome: this is my fifth year to take it (technically, sixth year, as middle school split the first credit into two grades). Last summer, I spent a month in France studying abroad. I think I can comprehend French very well now.

Newspaper: Copy Editor, Centerspread Editor
This certainly takes up the most of my time. I spend an average of three hours each day for this–usually either an hour before school/lunch, class period, and an hour after-school. I spend a LOT more if there is a workweek–I’m at the school for a week until 6:30; 10 PM on Fridays. This is the most academically significant extracurricular I’m involved in; teaching me the complexities and nuances of grammar.
It has prepared me most for future jobs: I’ve mastered InDesign, Photoshop, and many other publishing softwares. Additionally, I can speak like an AP Stylebook. I started off as a reporter (freshman year), moved onto an Assistant Section Editor (sophomore year), then onto the Features Section Editor (junior year), finally closing with two positions: Copy Editor and Centerspread Editor. (I want to be a Copy Editor when I grow up!)

This stands for (ENTER WOMEN’S SHELTER), which I founded and am president of. It’s an outreach program that helps bruised and battered women, ones who need to get job-interview clothes, etc.
This is the most personally significant–my mom was abused by my dad, he left her 8-months pregnant. She had to work two jobs––blahblahblah personal life, you don’t care, okay moving on

I started a Christmas drive that raised several thousands of dollars worth of toys, etc. I’m very, very proud of this extracurricular. As after-school special as this sounds, I founded this club because I felt powerless in my own situation.

I also did study abroad for a month.

Work:

I have founded a business where I teach very young children French, and worked at a financial company as a paid intern (!) for three summers. I was also an ACT tutor, and raised two girls’ CS by three points each.

Honors/awards:
I don’t feel like looking them up after typing all of that, but I have won several UIL awards for the newspaper, am an AP Scholar with Honor, am a part of three honor societies, American Mensa, etc.

My recommendations practically sparkle. My essays are wonderful. I was a little tongue-in-cheek on some applications.

I am also, apparently, a geographically desirable student. I live in Texas, a very underrepresented state at most Northeastern schools.

Ugh sorry if that’s too long d:

Besides your GPA, I don’t see you having any issues getting into all of the schools you’ve listed. Your writing is beautiful, and your scores and EC’s are fantastic! This is sorta my first chance, so I’m sorry I’m not more specific!

Thank you very much!

North Carolina-Chapel Hill:Reach (if you were instate, you would be in, trust me I went to East Chapel Hill High School for freshmen year and almost everyone could get into UNC)
Mizzou (already in!): (Congratz!)
Vanderbilt: Low Reach
UT (instate student):Match
Georgetown:Reach
UGA:Match
Washington & Lee:Not familiar with this school, but based on their admissions criteria, I’m giving you a “yes”

Cendrillion, your story is truly one that I can somewhat relate to as I also underwent chalenges in my life, though not as severe as yours. I truly hope that you will succeed wherever you go, don’t get me wrong, you deserve it. Your EC’s look great and should definitely help you stand out against the numerous other applicants with the same if not higher GPA/ACT scores. Your English Score in ACT and your spectacular score in Lit(I took it, and let’s just say that it’s definitely not within 1 standard deviation of your score ;p) would suit your future major well and would definitely show colleges that you have true passion for the language and writing.

Once again, best of luck in all of your future endeavors,

Sincerely,

Piano.

P.S. You sound very cute haha, personality like the type of girl that I would date.
P.S.S. I’m not ugly
P.S.S.S. I have a six-pack :)

**The only reason I say this is because Michigan wants a 4.0UW from OOS applicants.

cen, My son was just accepted to Michigan last Friday, to the school of engineering, with a 3.75 uw GPA and we’re OOS. They want well- rounded candidate, imo.

My definition of B+ schools that are on your list would be schools such as BU and Fordham. Others not on your list are schools like Holy Cross, Lafayette, George Washington, and Furman. Slightly more selective B+ schools might be schools like Boston College NYU (except Stern and Tisch), Bucknell, William and Mary, and Lehigh. The specific school (major) you’re applying to affects the grade, depending on the school.

Oh, ok! I’m not applying to UMich, I just googled it and read some kind of acceptance thing from 2007. I wanted to give the person a good chance, but didn’t know a whole lot about the school. Sorry! :(

Hmm…those all sound like kind of expensive schools. I’ve already been accepted to Mizzou, which has a higher journalism program ranking than Columbia (!), so I’d rather go there. Thank you for your options, though, I really appreciate the time you took! Congrats on your son getting into Michigan!

Thank you for your chances, pianodude! Where are you applying? I could chance you!

Sorry, I’ve tried to keep dating off college confidential––there was a posting a while ago about a guy who put an SAT barrier for the girl he’d date in college. No joke! Thank you anyway :)

bump bump bump
