Chance me!

HI!

So I am currently going into my senior year of high school and as of right now my top choice is boston university! I’m sorta intimidated here cause I’ve read a lot of other chance me’s and they all have high SAT scores and GPA’s… but for me, it’s not my SAT scores or my GPA that stand out, its my community service accomplishments.

Asian
GPA: 3.0
SAT- Reading: 500
Math: 570
Writing: 590

Several Honors classes throughout high school
Criminal Forensics
several art classes
total of 6 years of Spanish
4 years of history
4 years of science
4 years of english
3 years of math

Senior schedule:
AP US History
AP Spanish
Honors English
Honors earth and Space Science
Criminal Justice
Honors Psychology
Yearbook
and I am doing the Bridge Program (a program where I no longer go to school during my 4th quarter of senior year and go intern somewhere that interests me and will hopefully follow me into my future)

As of now, I am a B/B+ student. I struggled a lot my freshman and sophomore year but i really stepped up and got better grades last year and the end of my sophomore year. I’m hoping BU will notice this and realize that I really started trying my best.

Community Service:
Visited an orphanage in Honduras with my spanish class in 8th grade (15 people)
Visited the same orphanage the summer after freshman year (8 people)
Visited the same orphanage the summer after sophomore year (25 people)
Numerous food pantries
I am about to start volunteering at a boys and girls club in lawrence mass., to help kids with homework and tutor them

The last two trips were set up by myself, where I organized everything that needed to be worked out to make it work. I took up a lot of responsibility for these trips and really tried to make a difference in others lives.

My community service really is what will help me get into BU. I am planning on going back to the orphanage in december.

I plan on applying to the School of Education! Thank you for your time!

You do have great community service however, this is not the most important thing in terms of admission. If your GPA and SAT score are below the average, it won’t matter what community service and other activities you have done. With that being said, it’s great that you have an upward trend in your GPA—colleges love to see that you have done progressively better. However, a 3.0 is still low for BU and your SAT score which is only a 1660 is much below BU’s average. I believe the incoming class had around a 1900-2000 this year. I’d try retaking them in the fall or maybe even try taking the ACT because right now BU is a bit of a reach.

Thank you so much for giving me an honest answer! I’m definitely taking the SAT’s at least one more time, so hopefully I will do a lot better. I’ve never been a good tester which is where my grades slip, but I have a very strong class schedule this year which will hopefully really boost my GPA! I’m taking 2 AP classes and an honors class right now which I should do well in, so I hope to do better so I can get accepted! Thanks again!
