Chance Me?

Hello, I'm currently a High School Junior from the Chicago area. I am a white, Jewish male who is currently attending a very high nationally ranking public school (top 100) and I am wondering what my chances are for a number of schools I am considering applying to.

I have acted, designed sound and lights, stage managed, and have been a camp counselor for the summer programs. Next year I will most likely be the student director, a huge leadership role).
Peer Leadership (10-12)
Model UN (11-12)
Junior Engineering and Technical Society (11-12)
Young Progressives (11-12)
Peer Jury (11-12)

Awards:
Rotary Merit Award
AP European History student of the year
Illinois Association of Teacher of English Essay Contest - 1st Place
Dean's List Honor Roll for all semesters

Recommendations:
My AP European History teacher was my favorite teacher I have had in high school, and I got the highest grade in the class both semesters. I took on opportunities to have large roles in projects and simulations, and I led discussions and seminars to prepare for the AP test. I think he was very impressed with all this, so he chose me as student of the year when he gave everyone his end of the year awards. On of the reasons I am taking Philosophy H next year is because he is the teacher.

My AP Language and Composition teacher is my favorite teacher this year. He really helped me with my development as a writer (which was my weakest point in the past) and ended up nominating some of my essays for contests and awards. As an English teacher, I'm sure he will be able to write a good recommendation.

Schools:
UIUC
Northwestern
UChicago
Emory
Vanderbilt
Carleton
Davidson
Bowdoin
Swarthmore
Pomona
Dartmouth
Brown
Princeton

Every single one looks good , you should even try Yale or MIT

You look good for UIUC and Emory

The ivy leagues are kind of a coin flip-I know kids with your stats who got in and some who got wait listed and some who got rejected

Best of luck-I’m sure you’ll do well because of your stats!!

You seem to have a very strong resume, but what is it that you’re looking to study? You’ve listed a lot of great schools, but the school is only great if it suits your needs in terms of what you want to study. For instance, if you are thinking about engineering, then UIUC is phenomenal, and you will get the in state tuition.

I’m probably thinking of studying something to do with the social sciences, most likely either history or economics. I’m mainly just applying to UIUC because I would assume it’s an in-state safety. Do you think I have a reasonable shot at any of the Ivies?

All the schools seem to be match to high match with the exception of a few.

Princeton: Reach
UChicago: Low-reach
Dartmouth: Low-reach

Chance or help me?

I like your performing arts hook. It’s an area where many cannot go. Also because you have such strong credentials I think that you can cut down the list to 8 schools (or less). GL

Please realize that nobody on this forum, unless he/she is an admissions officer, can assess your chances at any of these schools. As you probably know, the college admissions game is quite unpredictable. Don’t base your chances on what an inexperienced student thinks. To give you an example, my son applied to 17 colleges (4 Ivies, 5 privates on par with Ivies). Trying to be unbiased (well, I tried but you know how that goes), I predicted admission to 12 schools. Well, it turned out he got into 8 of them. We used the terms reach, high match, etc. My predictions worked for some and we were a bit disappointed when other schools either wait listed him or rejected him. He has a very unique story related to his health that only 3 other HS seniors in this country this year could have told. So naturally we thought that he had a real hook (he has done so much for the healthcare community) that would get him in. But it wasn’t meant to be. He was lucky enough to be accepted at WUSTL, where he will be enrolling this fall. The moral of the story is that unless the person chancing you knows how the 20,000-30,000 other students applying measure up, there is just no way of knowing what your chances are.

Don’t worry, I am taking anything that anybody says on this forum with a grain of salt. I myself have heard considerable amounts of horror stories this year from both seniors and guidance counselors, and I know that anything can happen in the game of college admission. I just wanted to hear a few opinions. By no means will I let the ideas on here completely influence my applications or build up my hopes. Next year, I just plan on rolling the dice and seeing where they land. Thank you for your consideration though.
