chance me?

Just wondering what those of you out there think about my chances :)
I'm a high school junior looking to apply.

White / Male / Out-of-state, probably not applying for financial aid

GPA: 3.92 (W), 3.73 (UW)

Rank: School doesn't rank, but at least top 15%

SAT: 720 CR, 700 M, 680 W (2100)

ACT: Haven't received my results yet

SAT II: 720 Lit, 650 math 1, 640 US history (second two i probably wont submit)

APs: Jr. year - AP Lang, AP US H, Accel Latin (6th year course)
Sr. year - AP Lit, AP World H, AP Latin, AP Stats

Other senior year courses: Honors calc, honors physics, high-level band

Co-curriculars: Heavily invested in music and theater
In NHS, swim team, acapella, pep band, taking clarinet lessons, taking piano lessons, teaching clarinet lessons, tutoring, AFS

Recs:

They'll be good, but not ground-breaking. From my English and Latin teachers who I have great relationships with and are classes I succeed in. Also getting one from my Drama Advisor that should be my strongest one, he knows me very well and thinks highly of me. Good relationship with my counselor.

Essay:

Probably my strong point, to be honest. My GPA isn't anything special, and I don't have any one detail on my app that will jump out instantly, but my essays should be pretty great. Writing and creativity are my strong suits.

I’d say you have a pretty good chance. You should definitely apply. Like you said, your GPA is probably your weak spot. Of course you won’t get any points for being minority or female. You really need to make sure you essays are great. Write them early, and get them looked at by at 3 people. Make sure you do some volunteer work, and summer programs also look good as well. Good Luck!

Thanks. Is the common app essay already available to work on, do you know? I plan on volunteering for NHS loads and doing stuff for my church too. Thanks for the input.

The common app was available to work on last year beginning in August, so I would assume it would be about the same time this year. Which college within Cornell are you applying to?

Pretty good chance… More leadership would be better and SAT IIs are a little low.

Looking at the school of Arts and Sciences. Thanks for the input.

If you’re applying to arts and sciences, then you need to send at least two subject tests. However, I got into arts and sciences with a 690 in literature and a 650 in U.S. history (after retaking them). So, yes, your SAT IIs are a little low and I would definitely recommend retaking them, but it is possibly to get accepted without stellar subject test scores.

Hi! The common app essay options however are usually relatively similar/ the same year to year, so a quick google search for last years should allow you to start early!

@gchats: There’s no such thing as “chancing.” College admissions is a BIG CRAPSHOOT. Don’t try to ask other s to chance you. 99.9% of people are not Cornell admissions officers, so don’t count on us. Focus on how you can improve your application. I see you’re very interested in the arts, so I would drop things like swim team because they don’t help you at all. Everything you do must be either all music or drama. Saying that you take piano lessons doesn’t make you stand out. Win more awards, win more competitions, start a club where you teach kids the piano for charity, whatever. I hope this helps!

@darkray2000‌ I seriously seriously hope you are joking. “Everything you do must be either all music or all drama” is more then a bit extreme. If OP likes to swim, he should NOT quit. Swimming can show passion, determination, longterm commitment, and (if made a captain) leadership. OP already teaches clarinet, and although volunteering would be nice, I’m sure he wasn’t going to write takes piano lessons…OP if you are talented musically, submit a recording etc.
