Chance me?

Hey guys. First post on CC :)

Im a brazilian white male, and might apply ED I.

I attend to a VERY rigorous private school, that ranks in the top 1% of schools in Brazil

GPA - estimated 3.3 for high school average (currently at 3.5, but grade 12 is very demanding)
SATs - 730 CR/ 700 M/ 710 W
Top 10% ranking within school

Languages:

English
German
Portuguese (duh)
Italian
Spanish

Activities:

Semester-long exchange to Canada (grade 11)
Founded an educational NGO (grade 12)
Marketing VP at a Junior Achievement mini company (won 2nd best in Latin America, grade 11)
Graduation committee (grade 12)
Yearbook committee (grade 12)
Piano/Music Classes (grade 9-11)
Brazilian Youth Parliament winner and participant (grade 12)
Best short movie award (state wide, grade 11, directed)

Expecting very good recs. Will require some financial aid. Expecting major in Econ.

PS. The brazilian system does not allow us to chose classes in high school. We have to take every single academic class possible. While on my exchange to Canada I took English 11, Bio 12, SS 11 and Pre-Calc 11.

Thanks!

I don’t if W&L has significantly different criteria for international applicants, but if you apply ED I think you have a great chance.

@coppijr‌ Thanks for your reply!

@BrzlGuy Unfortunately, the one group with a more abysmal admission rate than URMs is international students. Historically only about 7% of international applicants are accepted to W&L. Given your GPA profile is on the low half of the student profile, I would estimate your odds of acceptance at 1 in 20 or about 5% based upon past admission numbers. Your chance might increase slightly if you apply ED 1 and will further increase if you do not need financial aid. Good luck to you.

@voiceofreason66‌ Thanks for your answer. Could you tell me where you got that stat from?

@BrzlGuy it is from the 2012-13 W&L Fact Book. These are the following acceptance rates from 2008-2012.

2008 692 applied, 37 accepted, 16 enrolled, acceptance rate 5.3%
2009 641 applied, 53 accepted, 27 enrolled, acceptance rate 8.2%
2010 660 applied, 43 accepted, 19 enrolled, acceptance rate 8.0%
2011 609 applied, 49 accepted, 17 enrolled, acceptance rate 8.0%
2012 558 applied, 33 accepted, 24 enrolled, acceptance rate 5.9%

@voiceofreason66‌ and where can I find the Fact Book?

@BrzlGuy Here is link to 2011-12 Fact Book since 2012-13 is password protected.

The international admission info is on page 7
<a href=“Washington and Lee”>Washington and Lee;

Looks like I made a mistake on 2010 acceptance rate it should be 6.5% not 8.0%. Sorry for the mistake.

2012-2013 Fact Book isn’t password protected…I just opened it.

@voiceofreason66‌ Wow that is indeed very low. But I did notice that yield for international admits was really low. What’s up with that?

@BrzlGuy I am not sure. My guess is that those internationals who get admitted to W&L are also getting into more recognized schools. W&L is an excellent school but it may not have the name recognition of other top schools but I really can’t say why the yield is low with the exception of 2012 when the yield was quite high.

@coppijr Here is the link to the Fact Book web page. I tried clicking on 2012-2013 Fact Book. I could not get in.

Voiceofreason is a negative person. Think positively about your chances and GO FOR IT!! You have a decent shot. If you really want to attend, make sure you show lots of direct interest by either visiting (might not be possible) or contacting admissions directly to display a high level of interest in the school.

@wlpoppa Your personal attack is not nice. My evaluation of @BrzlGuy chance of admission is based upon historical data of International student admission rates. And I am not sure in what world you are in but a 5-7% acceptance rate is not considered “a decent shot” at admissions.

Once again you ignore the fact that you have no clue of the qualifications of the students rejected in prior years. Bezel guy appears to have a reasonable, not slam dunk, chance based on stats. He will need a great essay and show a high level of interest in attending.

Good luck bguy!!!

Voice. You are one negative person. Lighten up. Live a little. Get the chip of your shoulder and be happy!

@wlpoppa Thanks a lot for your niceness! I really hope I get in :)

FWIW there is at least one Brazilian in this first year class - go for it!
