Chance me?

I feel fairly confident in most of my colleges choices, but I’m worried about NYU, Oberlin, and Vanderbilt.

finalist in regional piano competition
finalist in state university writing contest (winner announcement is pending, but the writing piece will be published also)
Attended 2 prestigious music camps in my state
1st place in state fair art exhibit

I’m also taking an online college calculus course and a few others for independent study.

I realize that my admission will first count on my music audition, but academically, what do you think my chances are?

I almost forgot, my ACT score is average (27) but from practice tests that I’ve been doing I’m getting 30-33, so hopefully when I take the next real test it’ll be in the 30s.

I think that you have a good GPA, and your course load is mostly competitive, but your extracurriculars seem to lack a focus/passion, and there is no strong leadership in any of the extracurriculars. (To be honest, colleges might think you did some of your extracurriculars just to put them on your resume) I think certainly if you believe that you are quite talented at the piano then by all means submit a supplement, but I hope you realize that admission will never count first on your music audition. In fact, that will probably be the last thing they look at if they look at it at all. Academics, test scores, extracurriculars, and essays are by far more important. As for your individual schools, I would say NYU is a low reach and Vanderbilt is a reach/high reach. I don’t know much about Oberlin College, sorry.

I would love it if you could chance me back! http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1796275-what-do-you-think-of-my-chances-are-at-these-universities.html#latest Good luck!

Really? From what I’ve seen colleges usually look at your auditions to see if you’re good and then from there narrow in the applicant pool based on academics and essays. I think for NHS that’s my really main leadership (all officers had to partake in the ceremony for new inductees (I played a classical piece for it) and then our service projects). But I think you’re right. I should probably talk about my various extracurriculars in an essay and subconsciously define me.

Conservatively assuming you score a 30 on the ACT, I would say you have a good shot at NYU and Oberlin while Vanderbilt is more of a reach. Vandy is a very tough school to get into as you know, but I do encourage you to apply because it’s a great school and I honestly think you have a good shot because of your musical talents. For that school as well as the others, try to get a leadership position in 1 or 2 of your ECs… If you win student council preident your chances will be helped dramatically because it shows schools that you are not only smart but also well-respected and well-liked by your peers.

Good Luck!.. Could you please chance me back?
