More insight in playwriting:
Playwriting has been a passion of mine since my sophomore year of HS (I’m a junior now), and when I saw my first show on stage, I was mesmerized. Seeing something that I made be performed like it was a professional show was amazing, and I hope to do more. I am currently applying for a program in my city to produce my own shows on adult stages, and I plan to study it in college (amy good schools for that, let me know). Also, I am an avid chemistry kid. I am not doing the greatest in AP Chem, but I want to do chemistry forever. I keep my sciences within my school, but I want to branch out more. VolunTEEN is fun, but that is really more medicine, learning-how-to-be-in-a-hospital oriented. Any science programs out there that I can delve into? Thanks for chancing!
I was going to say you have a low chance due to the relatively poor SAT, but you’re Black, so you’re probably going to get into at least one of the Ivies
You have an excellent profile. I’m not sure why you have Drexel on your list though.
@beepybeetle your post seems to have one point and one point only - I’m writing only because I want to say something to you. We must treat all human beings with dignity. This poster should not be made to feel she would get something she does not deserve because she is black. Her SAT scores are fine. If she’s a contender it’ll be due to her hard work. Unqualified students don’t just get into an ivy because they’re black. Black students who get into elite schools worked hard and deserve it.
@bridgygo What are you implying? I’m saying something that is true and not saying if it’s intrinsically wrong or right. It’s literally the same thing as telling an Asian or White kid they have a poor chance at Harvard because their 33 ACT is below average or their ECs don’t live up to expectations.
@beepybeetle I’m implying that you were not being fair or humane. And no, It is not the same. You’ll have to dig a little deeper to figure this out, but the two scenarios are very different. If I said I wanted to know my chances at getting into a school with a 33 ACT would you say “I was going to say great until I saw you were white?” And the fact that you imply being a person of color gives you some undeserved benefit is wrong. If you’d said “that’s a great profile and the fact that you’re black and first generation is an added hook” that would be very different.
I wish this playwright student the best of luck. I think she sounds very interesting.
Be aware that Brown does not have minors. You could double concentrate or simply concentrate in one subject and take classes in the other. Brown has a very vibrant student theater scene, so you could be heavily involved with theater without concentrating in it.
@bridgygo OK so basically you’re calling me racist. For stating fact?
A 1450 SAT is below the average for the three ultra-reaches on her list. But in the holistic application processes that those schools utilize, being an URM (Black in this case) can help smooth out the proverbial edges within her application, which means that adcoms will have a slightly easier time swallowing an SAT score that is at or below the 25th percentile. I admit I worded it poorly, but my point was ‘being black helps’.
The 33 ACT in my example was just an SAT/ACT conversion fail on my part. I should have used 31. If an ORM/white individual got a 31 on their ACT and asked for their chances, I would have told them exactly what you said (you can dig through my posts if you want to see examples), and then I would have suggested that they to go and attempt a retake.
@bridgygo@beepybeetle I do plan to take the SAT again. I am fully aware that I need to jump at least 100 points. Still, please don’t say I’m going to get in JUST because I’m black.
@arwarw Thank you for the chance! There is an infosessiom coming! Do you happen to know which date is the one you mentioned? If not, that’s cool! I do want to apply ED, but financial aid is still something I have to look out for. I am not sure if I can drop acceptance if the aid is enough with outside scholarships. Please give me some advice! I visited Brown for Spring Break, and I did not get to see Kym Moore, but Ms./Mrs. Crawford seems like a promising option to help my application. Regarding Double-concentrating, I looked at the credits for Brown and I should be able too! Regarding the chem aspect of things, what should I do for Brown to help my app? Thank you for all the help and the school recs! I’ve heard a lot about Fordham, and I’m interested!
@arwarw Sorry, I just saw this now, but thank you for the advice! Last question:
Is it true that you cannot graduate with a BS and a BA at Brown? If so, are there ways to get around this?
Hi, I wish you the best. Your chances of going to Brown are equal to anyone with the same academic achievements.
Apply to many Universities in the range of your scores and be happy with wherever you decide to go. I am a parent of a child with top scores from a public school that applied to 14 Universities and was accepted to 4 of “#30-40 top universities” and waitlisted to the “#1, #3, and #5 top Universities” . He received a call on May 7th of this year that the #1 University accepted him from their waitlist. You never know. Stay Positive.
@IvyPlaywright You have a great application, I would advise to apply to more (lower)Ivy’s that you like maybe Cornell, and UPenn. If Brown is your number 1 choice apply early. If you don’t get into Brown early; Emory also has ED2 which could be a boon to your chances.
Yale- High Reach
Harvard- High Reach
Brown- Low Reach/ High Match
Emory- High Match
NYU- Match
UGA Honors College- Match
Auburn Honors College- Safety
Drexel Honors College-Safety
What @beepybeetle was saying is true and I’m sure they weren’t trying to be racist, but he/she is rude and uncouth. You would think an ivy alum would be above that, but I’ve been proven many times that’s not the case. Don’t pay him/her any mind.
