Chance me?

Hello,

I am currently a junior at the Hotchkiss school. My current GPA is a 3.6, but my overall is a 3.4. My school does not weight APs or release class rankings, though I am in the top quarter of my class for junior year, and a little above average for my overall GPA. My current ACT score is a 31, which I’m hoping to improve by next year.

Georgetown is my dream school because its SFS would provide a good base for international careers, which is what I’m sure I want to do. I will be going on the NSLI-Y summer program is Tajikistan this year, which is a State Department funded language program that is very selective. Additionally, last year I went on exchange to Colombia for a semester, and as a result I took AP spanish this year after only two years of Spanish class, and will be going into AP Spanish lit next year. I am also very involved with the Spanish culture and language club at my school, and I am involved in a project designed to help reach out to Latinx students and connect them with scholarships in my area.

In addition to that, I write for the school paper, have played piano for 12 years, proctor younger students during study hall, am involved with three sports teams (though I am not especially good at any of them,) help to build the set for the school play, and volunteer on the campus farm. I also volunteer in the summer at a hospital, and have done service projects in Morocco and Guatemala.

In addition to AP Spanish, this year I also take APUSH and AP Lit. Next year I plan to take AP Euro, and Honors English if I end up being placed in that class, and an international relations and national security elective.

All that considered, I know that Georgetown is very focused on GPA and test scores, and mine are not quite up to their standards, though I have improved greatly academically in the past year. What do you think my chances are?

Thanks for your time!

In the last four years Hotchkiss has sent more kids (29) to Georgetown than any other college (except Yale). I imagine that your best advice on chances will come from your guidance counselor who will be able to take into account all of your strengths and weaknesses relative to your peers. The School of Foreign Service is among the most competitive programs. Stats from Hotchkiss suggest that a 9.5 or above gives you a reasonable shot and I imagine that the grades skew higher for the SFS but again it’s about your whole application.
