Chance me

I’m not related to any religion, so, I don’t really mind studying at Christian school.( I have studied in Jewish one, so religious environment is familiar, but we studied reliong more like literature and Mythology ).But still being in non-affiliated school would be more preferable.
I’m a bit concerned about for-profit and non-profit part, how being for-profit affects this place ?

About cities, I would prefer colder place to warm.
Generally, as for now, I like UAH more than GC

@gearmom

99 out of 100 for-profit colleges are absolute NO-go in USA. Employers frown at for profit college degrees, and sometime don’t even acknowledge it. Just type “for profit scam” in google and you will see why.

^ And Grand Canyon is currently a for profit college but they are trying to become a non-Profit.

Well that’s a good news. I still wouldn’t pick it though if it’s still in process.

UAH is so much better than GC because there are lots of engineering experience available there. NASA is in Huntsville!

^Exactly. And I don’t want to disparage anyone’s religion but if @interapp is religiously ambivalent and the student body is more committedly Christian, you’d have more of a mismatch.

Especially many Christian colleges have some rules like “no sexual intercourse before marriage” and “no girls in boy’s dorms by any means.” I have no idea about intimate parts of your life(and I would rather not know lol) but you see what I am saying?

A bit of digression, but I would be interested to see Buddhist College.

Thank you for your replies and help!
Seems like GC is not a match for me at all.
I hope UAH will accept me. I looked their CE major up and it seems very good and possibility of minoring in Aerospace is a great bonus.

I will let you know how it goes.
Do you know how many days typically it takes for them to give a decision ?

@gearmom @paul2752

@interapp I don’t think it will take long. I think it is pretty automatic with high stats kids. But I don’t know the international financial part. They are a top school for aerospace. And rank well for CS.

Tell your parents it is Rocket Coty and NASA is there. That will sound glamorous. :wink: It’s more bearable temperature wise too.

When you are accepted, I’ll post a few more things.

True! Will talk to my parents tomorrow(now it is around 3 am in my country :D)

I suppose I should not apply for financial aid as I am not eligible, right?

Do they usually give these scholarships to international students? Do you know any cases when international student get it?
(I am asking probably a lot of questions, but I just get to know this college and their office is closed till Monday, so trying to figure out right now all questions, so I can apply next week).
I wish I knew about this college earlier, would have applied to fewer schools and saved money. Thanks again!
@gearmom

I think they will be very international friendly. https://www.uah.edu/isss A school doesn’t have automatic merit scholarships unless they are interested in attracting smart students. It says automatic merit scholarships are for international students too. https://www.uah.edu/admissions/undergraduate/financial-aid/scholarships Call them if you have any questions.

What is your AP class?

AP English and Literature
and Chemistry, but because school doesn’t have regular Chem this year, their renamed it to Honors Chemistry(-.-)

I will call them on Monday, they are on break this week.
@gearmom

If you get into an American uni, take both APs especially Chem. That’s just a hassle for a CS major.

Ok, thanks! Will take them.
What about Calculus ?

Definitely calculus. Take both Calc 1 and 2 through AP.

Grand Canyon is not a reputable university; it’s a for-profit, meaning they’re not in it for your education but to make a profit off of you, as the name indicates. Its degree has basically zero value.

Columbia College MO and Adelphi are roughly similar in terms of value.
My advice is for you (if you can safely return home or if you can extend your stay in OK) to email and ask if you can defer for a year so that you can work and earn some money toward your expenses. At worst, you’ll have a place to go to in 2019.
Use your gap year well.
Don’t wait to retake your tests: Retake at your current school, both ACT and SAT, as much as you can - your GC should check that you meet the guidelines for ACT and SAT fee waivers so take advantage of that since once you’re home it’ll become unaffordable again).
Will you graduate from your US high school? if you don’t know, see if that can be arranged. Indeed, Pomona treats all students who graduate from a US high school the same way, which would help in making the process need blind.

@MYOS1634 OP wants to apply to UAH now. What do you think? Qualifies for a good merit scholarship.

Yes it’s a good idea, but I’ve forgotten interapp’s stats - check that the automatic scholarship keeps costs within budget. Then they can enter the automatic scholarship amount on the certification of finance.
However OP should NOT major/minor in aero, since these jobs require a security clearance (NASA probably does). MechE doesn’t and I think EADS is nearby so it’d be a way to circumvent the aero/security issue.
Also, OP should email the international office and ask if they have a “friendship family” program, whether the dorms and cafeteria are open during breaks (which ones), what activities are scheduled on campus on weekends.

@MYOS1634 1470 SAT and the GPA part was tricky to understand but looked good.

@interapp You have to take at least 5 classes of math starting with Calc A. Unless you are super, super, super confident in your math ability, I’d retake Calc for an easy grade. Everything will build and there is no need to rush.

Post #57 Or if not MechE then EE or CE.
