my stats allow me to qualify for full scholarship, which is good. My gpa is 4.82 out of 5 in my country over HS and my diploma is 4.92 out of 5( we get two transcripts, don’t know how to explain that) and 4.0/4.0 here.
I have talked to my parents about gap year, and they are not in favor of taking a gap year since next year my brother is also applying; so, paying for both of our applications will be a lot. So, I will try out UAH and if it doesn’t work, then will take gap year.
What is a problem with security clearance? I am not planing to major in aero, just out of curiosity @MYOS1634
I am graduating from HS here(will have US diploma), will it also be need-blind for transfer option in Pomona if I end up not doing gap year?
@interapp If you have a 4.0 and retake the SAT get a 1520 or better then you get free housing in addition to free tuition at UAH. They will update the scholarship. You could also try the ACT for a 34.
I have 4.0 GPA only for US HS, I am not sure if that will work.
But I will call them on Monday and ask. @gearmom
NASA and a lot of NASA contractors do not hire foreign nationals. They can’t even go on-site without special permissions. If you can work no NASA or military contracts then aerospace wouldn’t be a good option.
I was using Nasa just an example of many engineering facilities down in huntsville.
I know about those issues with aerospace, that’s why don’t want to major in it. But minoring seems like an option.
@momocarly
You can always take aero electives if you wish.
What do you think about Minerva at KGI?
I want to apply, but it is binding, so need some opinions , pros and cons
Online learning is a bit weird to me, although the idea of constantly moving between countries is very appealing to me + being in small community.
Also, they offer good aid as I know.
@MYOS1634 , @gearmom tag anyone else who would know about this college.
Also, I am going to contact current international students from Adelphi and Columbia College, and learn their feedbacks about both colleges.
Minerva offers a good education if you’re okay having online discussions rather than physically being next to people (you do see them through webcams etc and you’re part of a small group too). It’s an intriguing concept and the classes seem to be doing well.
The part with online education is a bit weird to me, my friend just got transfer acceptance there from one of European colleges and told me about this college
I like their idea and global learning is very attractive. But is it risky to go there?
What do you mean, “risky”?
Their first class must be graduating, you may want to inquire what sort of job offers they got or graduate schools they’ll be attending.
Minerva is great! Seriously, it is. The students there are doing awesome things, internships, research etc. The global experience is something else. You get to immerse yourself in 7 different cultures, 7 different cities, over 4 years. You live with your classmates and take classes through the Active Learning Forum. It basically forces you to participate in class as you can’t stay hidden, and the students say it’s a great way to learn.
As regards financial aid, my friend got in and their EFC is $50. I think insurance of $1000 is mandatory but still, $1050 isn’t bad.
Just wanted to update:
After several conversations with my parents, we decided that GAP year is not a good option because of my brother. So, I will just look at what I have and work with that. I have right now 4 waitlists and if none of them will work out, then options are Adelphi U Honors College or Columbia College Honors Roll.
Adelphi gave me two scholarships(additional one from Honors College, got really cute letter from Dean) almost covering whole tuition(leaving 8K per year) and as I plan to commute, the COA( or amount asked for I-20)will be equal to Columbia College(tho, here I would live on campus).
Adelphi has 3+2 program with Columbia University, which I would love to do, tho I know the aid is very limited for guaranteed transfers, especially for internationals. I like their study abroad programs(the schools and cities); they have lot of exchange going on, so I will not even need to pay extra cost to study abroad(but in Columbia, I will need to).
What do you think about Adelphi’s Honors College?
My parents are concerned that if I go to Adelphi, I will miss out campus life, which I can get in Columbia College, tho Adelphi is a better option academically and as a network. Which one would you suggest to international student?
some additional thoughts:
1)About commuting, it will be around 40-50 minutes on public transportation, which is normal for me(I spent last 6 years going from one part of city to another everyday spending hours on road). I have used public transportation in NYC area alone, and I could easily get where I needed.
2) Columbia College will cost me almost nothing during 2-4 years with on-campus job+summer work( talked to international students there, most of them pay for their r/b after the first year from their own earnings).
@gearmom , @MYOS1634 ,
I’d like to compare them side by side… Can you give the link to the Columbia college you’re talking of (there are five or six!)
Columbia College, MO- main campus. @MYOS1634
Probably Adelphi but that commute is going to be a hassle. Did you try UAH?
UAH is not an option for international student looking for aid. They require at least 37K $ bank statement to be considered for admission.
@gearmom
Commuting is what concerns me, I wonder how much I will miss out if I commute.
Oh. That is bad news about UAH.
It’s tricky. Adelphi is the better college academically at the better location and better known. See if they have a commuters area.
