Hi all. just wondering if there is a chance. . .
UW 3.8 weighted 4.2
all honors and AP classes (7 AP in total As in all, one C plus first semester freshman year which killed my gpa)
31 ACT (32 superstore)
Oos, white female
Hooks: 3rd generation legacy (both grandparents and both parents, also Grandfather from another side) and Grandfather is a professor there (but that hasn’t helped another family member who was waitlisted)
2 years dance team, 2 years lacrosse, 2 years field hockey, started a mental health club at my HS, volunteer work blah blah, working at an ice cream shop for a year
Founded a mental health organization and have won awards from this including a grant and another big award (essay about this)
great letters of rec, strong essays
as per naviance I’m somewhere in the middle of the last 3 years in terms of acceptance based on my stats
It’s just so competitive I’m feeling very uncertain. thx for input
You definitely have a good chance, but nothing is a sure thing in admissions. I’m basing this on your founding of a mental health organization that sounds like a serious pursuit - based on grant funding, winning big awards, etc. I think UMich is looking through activities to which ones are “exaggerated” or not really passions. Yours appears legit and like a true passion that you’ve spent considerable time on. Your stats are slightly low for OOS, but you do score high in demonstrated interest because of your legacy connections.
You have a good chance in my opinion. You have a decent GPA and test score. I think your essay about founding your mental health organization would be a strong point of your application because U of M, like most universities, tends to like a lot of entrepreneurial, nonprofit works students have done. If your essay focused a lot on not just your achievements with the org but also on how you grew/learned from the experience and show your passion, I think it will help.
@Teedub thanks so much for your response. My essay focused on my overcoming my anxiety and starting this charity organization that now is opening chapters in other states. I’m hoping it makes up for my gpa and test score. We shall see!
