(And for the essay...is the whole poor, disabled single parent, first in family to attend college good for essays? I think I could write it well, but there must be tons of kids with a similar story...)

Yea, you look like you have a solid chance. You should definitely apply. As for the essasy, you can find a way to work your family's challenges in, but don't make it entirely focused on that. Also, they love admitting first generation college kids, it definitely helps your app.

Hmm... I think it's a waste of both your time and my time for me to evaluate your chances since what I think doesn't matter in the long run. That's just what I think in general. I prefer to look at stats and tell you what you could work with to make your application really good. Having said that, your stats are pretty good. All of your school stuff is pretty solid. I think if you bump up your SAT when you take it again, that it'll improve your chances by quite a bit. You've got quite a few things working for you as well... being in-state, first generation college student, etc.

The one thing I like to stress is that you really want to spend a lot of quality time on your essay. This is your chance to speak directly to the admissions committee. When I think of the essay like this, I think it would be a waste to talk about what you mentioned. I mean, it's possible, but if I were on an admissions committee, I'd rather see a well-written essay about an activity that the student enjoys doing where this enjoyment really shows through than a well-written essay about how the student will be the first in his/her family to attend college. (though I think that that's a pretty important point to mention to the admissions committee... is there a spot on the application to tell them that? I forget.)

You seem to be quite into volunteer work... perhaps you could write an essay on that?

My advice is to concentrate heavily on the essay as well. Be creative as you like. I personally chose to pick my own topic and sent in a short essay about three eccentric individuals obsessed with mustard. I guess they like it, because I'm here. I must admit it was pretty great. The other required essays, be as honest as you can, and write as well as you can.
