HOW LIKELY:

University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign
University of Michigan-Ann Arbor
University of California-Berkeley
University of California-Los Angeles
University of Chicago
Northwestern University
Washington U. in St. Louis
Brown University
Stanford University
Princeton University

I know the last three are big reaches. But can you guys give me a sense of where I stand for the others? That would be super-ific.

Excellent stats murkywater-

UIUC: Safety (90%)
UMich: Safe Match (70%)
Cal: Match (60%)
UCLA: Match (60%)
Chicago: Match (55%)
NW: Match (55%)
Washu: Match (45%)
Brown: Match Reach (35%)
Stanford: Reach (25%)
Princeton: Reach (25%)
You could realistically get into any of these schools, murkywater.

Thank you, ncody0220! I feel better about some of my choices. I didn't want to make a list too top-heavy. I'm hoping to get into at least U of M and U of C.

Anyone else?

U of M? You won't be able to afford their tuition. They hit out of state applicants hard with additional tuition, and they don't give out merit for what you have listed either. Don't get too focused on UMICH

That is a good point. I'm getting some outside scholarship money but looking at their brochure, it looks like they add an extra $20k tuition to OOSers. I am starting to think UCLA and UCB will have the same issues (slamming OOSers with a lot of extra tuition).

Bump. Anyone else have any other opinions? I'm hoping to get at least five people so that I can corroborate responses.

Bump, bump. I'd like responses .. please? ;-)

I basically agree with the first poster. I think you can get into any school you set your mind to.

HYPS are always very hard to tell, but you seem spirited and to have good hooks, which in my view is vital. Admissions committees see plenty of kids with stellar records but no real spirit, and that doesn't seem to be the case with you. If you can convey that in a kick-ass essay then your odds are good anywhere.

I think you have a lot more than 3 big reaches. With current scores the ivies are unrealistic reaches and Northwestern and WashU are big reaches. A 220o would help but then you'd just be an average candidate at schools that accept 10% of applicants. The OOS publics as others have noted probably can't happen financially so you need to do a lot of work on this list.

Low income is a tip, not a hook. Questbridge is a great program but not a hook. You are an ORM from an overrepresented state. You need to have several schools where your stats are in the top 75%. Have some reaches, but with a 2200 that would be the lower ivies.

Sorry, suze, I disagree with you.

My school's scattergrams show that I would actually be a very good candidate for Northwestern and an average candidate for WashU. Granted, you haven't seen these, so you based your predictions off of the rest of the country. What I wanted to achieve by posting this thread was how I would compare to my applicant pool on a larger scale [not the entire country].

Last I checked, QuestBridge was a hook. About 30% of the QBers are eventually selected by the partner colleges. Princeton and Stanford are two of them. According to some of the statistics of the people who were accepted to these schools RD who were QBers, I'd be an average candidate, not a poor one. A QBer from my school with similar stats as mine received a triple acceptance from HYP. "Tip" indeed.

I think you're being overly pessimistic on some of my chances. What about the rest? You seemed to focus on the "big reaches" and commented on nothing else. WashU, Northwestern and Stanford, Brown and Princeton weren't the only schools I listed. Having several schools where my stats are at 75% would mean several safeties. I only really need 1. Why have more than 1? They are called a safety for a reason. The OOS schools may be out of my financial reach, but you didn't comment on how good my chances would be at them. In any case, I am going to revise my list. I just really liked U of M and the UCs. UIUC isn't that great of a public in my state and so I was looking for other schools that had better overall departments. If you can recommend me any other schools that would be better fits, that would be great.

If you can somehow give a better analysis for each specific school, that would be great. I actually didn't think I had a good chance at most of these schools until my counselor said that I did.

Thanks anyways.

I would try to improve your SAT to a 2200 if you can, if not then whatever. You seem to be a solid candidate for alot of places. It's a lottery for anyone at the big schools (HYP Stanford, ect)

jcll2002, thanks for the information. I regret putting up Stanford, Princeton and Brown up there now.

i agree with suze...try to retake SATs..also, bring up class rank if you can.

Thanks. My school doesn't rank. I wouldn't know if I was in the top 5% or not. I assume that I'm somewhere in the top 10%, however.

When I said lottery, I meant that once you reach a certain point "everybody is the same" and it is a lottery of who gets picked. You may as well apply, I know I will.

overall, u've great chance in most! best of luck!

It's a lottery for anyone at the big schools (HYP Stanford, ect)---agreed.

umm i just saw teh Questbridge thing..in that case you have a good chance..good luck!

University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign: Safety
University of Michigan-Ann Arbor: Safe Match
University of California-Berkeley: Reach
University of California-Los Angeles: Low Reach
University of Chicago: Low Reach
Northwestern University: Low Reach
Washington U. in St. Louis: Low Rach
Brown University: Reach
Stanford University: Super Reach
Princeton University: Super Reach

Stanford & Princeton are super reaches for everybody.. since it's hard to tell who gets in and who doesn't. I know people who get into these schools with stats like yours but I know many more who don't..

Good luck next year!

Yeah, I thought UCB would be hard to get into because I'm an OOSer. Thanks for all your help.

Anyone else? Thank you in advance!

Clearly you don't want the truth but expect it when posting here. You have ZERO chance for HYPSM. You are an Asian international applicant with below average SATs for the schools and nothing that comes close to setting you apart.

I have to agree with Suze, Northwestern is a big reach. Don't know who the kids are from your school but were they rich legacies?

You need to understand the numbers of us Asians trying to get into the same 15 colleges. A 2200 will help, but you need to aim at realistic schools.

Has Questbridge told you to apply to those schools?
