Chance me!

Hi peoole! I am an Asian-American female, and I am currently attending a public school in Washington state. (Not Bellevue, which has one of the best schools in the US.)

I am in a gifted program for Literacy (Reading, wiritng, language arts.) and Social Studies.
Iam in Advenced math and science. (There is no gifted program for math, all gifted children go to Adv math and science.)
I play the oboe. I am planning to play the alto saxophone over the summer for Jazz Band.
I can speak a limited amount of Japanese. (I am planning to go to Japan to learn Jpanese over the next few summers as well.)
In elementary school I played in an orff ensemble and choir. I also learned a limited amount of playing the digeridoo.
In seventh grade I am intending to:
Be a Teacher's Assisstant
Peer Counselor
Join Photo/Video club
do yearbook
join swim team
track
cross-country
My grades are mostly A's and B's.
Is this good enough for Choate, Exeter, Andover, Hotchkiss, Taft and Cate?
Note: I'm also going to apply for FA.

Oh, you’re in 6th grade? Okay, so you’ve got some time to work on making yourself a great applicant. Consider taking up two or three sports, getting involved in community service, and more or less perfecting your grades, although perfect grades aren’t necessary as long as you come across as a great person in your interviews, essays, and other application pieces.

As for judging whether what you’ve said makes you good enough for the schools you listed, it’s hard to say because A) it’s impossible to judge because I’m not an admissions officer, B) I’ve never met you in person, and C) you’ve still got years to go until you apply. But what I’d recommend is to keep going in the direction you’re going and just add some more activities like competitive sports and community service. And, if at all possible, try to eliminate those Bs (although, as I said, grades are by no means the MOST important part of applications for the these schools).

ummm…
try to do community service.
sports are good too, but i got into a couple schools, and… while i run, i’m not very athletic ^^

oh, and like tomthecat said, try to not make a lot of b’s…

oh, and essays and interviews are VERY important.

good luck!

Choate, Exeter, Andover, Hotchkiss, Taft and Cate are going to be hard. You can’t be completely sure about your chances even if you have solid test scores.

Recommendations?

Try to get oustanding recommendations.

Get a region-wide, county-wide swim team and win.

Extracurricular work to mention during the interviews. At your age maybe Adv. Algebra/Pre-Calculus, then in 7th grade Pre-Calculus/Beginner’s Calculus. And ask your school to enlist you to a accelerated program that sticks to state/national guidlines. An example are the Acellus program.

Community Service- At the time when you apply maybe about 50 or so hours will really help. Maybe like 2 hours a week during the summers? That would equal about 48 hours or so. And add some hours during the weekends.

Try to get into a prestigious summer program.

If you are good at oboe/sax, attempt to try out for county, region and statewide band/orchestra.

Take the SAT’s next year. With hard work you could score a 2000 or so. And apply for CTY- they have great financial aid as a bonus. Use the Barron’s textbooks. I got a 1400 on my first practice test D:, but I got bumped up to the 1900’s on the real test.
Then if you do well, repeat it in August when you’re in 8th grade. You’ll probably apply during the late winter of your 8th since that is when most applications are due. You will get your scores about a month before your applications.

There is a lot of competition for these schools. Make sure that you are willing to put in a lot of effort to get in. I’m applying for next year. Also try applying for Milton and Deerfield. They are excellent too.

Good Luck~

Precalculus in seventh grade? No, that’s absolutely ridiculous. And a 2000 SAT in 7th grade? Come on now, this is just unbelievable. This is crazy talk. Look, I just got into Andover. I’m a 10th grader in Algebra II at a good-ish private school - and that’s already accelerated a year. Most middle schools don’t even offer precalculus. There is absolutely no need to take any math classes five years before you technically need to. Sheesh. Holy crap, I just can’t get over how insane that recommendation is.

Just do your best. Don’t get forced into anything too difficult for you. Stretch yourself, but don’t overdo it.

Yup, what Tom said :)

thanks! this is really helpful!

You’re welcome
You seem to be very well-informed about boarding school, do you have any relatives who go to/went to one?

unfortunately, no.
