I e-mailed an alumnae about an interview because I'm a good 2 hours away
from the school, but she never wrote back :(

How did you find/contact this alumnus…hopefully, not directly? I would contact admissions and request an alumnus interview. My D. was contacted by the local Smith alumini group, who must have got a list of applicant names from the admissions office.

Agreed, not all alums do interviews so you should contact the admissions office if you want to do an interview in your local area. Though if you are applying for admission in the fall of 2010, it may be a bit late to do an interview anyway.

As for your chances, I think you have a lot of the features that Smith looks for, though it would have been good to know more about your academic schedule/how you did. Your 3 in AP US History is a bit of a low score, but they may not care if you did really well in the class itself. Or maybe history just isn’t your subject, I don’t know.

In general, it looks good. Hard to say if you’re a lock, but you’re clearly in the running.

I went onto the Smith alumnae interviews webpage and once I put in my zipcode, it gave me the contact information of a woman who lives nearby…I sent her an email and she never responded, so I’ll try emailing the admissions office.

Ah, I see. Well that’s fine then if you did it through the website. Maybe that particular alum got busy? I’m surprised she wouldn’t email you back, we’re usually a very responsive bunch. Were there other women’s names that it gave you or was she the only one?

Also, if you haven’t gotten a chance to visit Smith in person yet, it might be worth it to drive the two hours (fun little roadtrip) and do an interview on campus while you visit. You could go with a friend or a sibling if your parents can’t take you, and do a tour and so on.

I’m glad it went really well. Don’t forget to write her a thank you note. She interviews because she loves the school, not because she’s paid. If all you have is an email address, that will have to do, but if you have her mailing address, I’d send an old-fashioned thank you note.
