@grtd2010 yes, she’s already has been accepted at State Flagship but that’s not her ideal school - so now she’s swimming in the mega lottery with the rest
@ClarinetDad16 music ties to her hardship essay - it’s complicated. @ap012199 with an 800 in Math 1 and 800 in Chem - my questions was should she take Math 2 and English in January since it’s already reserved and paid for - or just write it off. I’m new so I hope I’m tagging this stuff properly! Pardon my naivety!
@MomEof3 My D is in a similar situation and she has applied to similar schools. She has a wider range of schools both in Engineering (BioMedical/Computer Science) and Pre-med.
MIT will take math1 or math 2 scores. I don’t remember if you can get a partial refund from College Board if you cancel. You can ask them. I think her test scores are fine now she needs great essays and recommendations.
@Ballerina016 excellent idea! I’ll ask College board about that but I’m not hopeful - lol. I even paid to have her scores sent on that test too - smh - by my 3rd kid I’ll have this process down pat! Oh that hindsight.
She has great recommendations. Her GC told me all 9-10’s from 3 teachers, GC is a 10, one from a Senator and her private musical teacher.
Now as to the essays … the kid has to shine on her own! The girl can write but she’s naturally modest and tends to downplay.
@grtd2010 I really wish the best for your D. Remember when Children’s Place came out with that shirt insinuating girls don’t like or can’t do math? They pulled it off their shelves before I could buy it. My D really wanted to wear that to every math competition.
@MomEof3 Your DD sounds amazing. I would report only her ACT and subject test scores. Don’t taint the 36 and 800s by reporting the SAT. She is completely qualified for all the schools but I would add a few more to the list to improve her chances of her application resonating with an admissions rep. I reccomend adding Columbia, Duke, and Johns Hopkin to her list if she has time to write the supplemental essays. Good luck!!
@Testingearly - she submitted SATs bcs she had a better essay score on that 23/24. I liked Columbia - she did not, I have 2 nieces down at Duke Medical but she wants a colder climate - same for Johns Hopkins - it’s a temperature thing. Tks so much for that valuable input - I appreciate it
You briefly mentioned research among tons of other activities. Did she submit her research paper to any competitions or had it published? If yes, she might want to upload her research paper to MIT slide room.
My DD is a freshman at MIT. Your DD stats look really good, but it is very difficult to chance since most of qualifying candidates have those stats. To my untrained eyes it just looks a little STEM light, but maybe it is because of the way you presented. Good luck to your DD!
@Ballerina016 tks for the response. The ASR program is a 3 year authentic science research program. It has not been published yet - earmarked for April/May, 2017. She is considering submitting something. For our area NJGS is a real exclusive honor and VERY competitive. I was hoping with Gov School, Space camp, Teton Science School and her STEM: Energy Solutions in Germany tour would be unique. Maybe not - idk but time will tell!
Here’s an update - 1st Runner up JSHS, US Presidential scholar candidate, rejected by MIT - thankfully she’s ok with that
Please let us know where she gets accepted. She sounds truly remarkable.
These stats are from Brown, but probably are similar to what you would find at other Ivies.
Last yr, Brown rejected/wl 84% of applicants with perfect 800 math scores and rejected/wl 72% of applicants with a 36 ACT. So while your daughter’s chances are better than the avg 6-9% accept rate at Ivies, it’s still a reach.
But good luck to her - she sounds fantastic!
@preppedparent and @wisteria100 tks so much - she’s a really great person and I know she will flourish wherever that may be :-*
Update - GC neglected to send out college transcript with applications as promised - oh boy. Her list changed as applications went out. So - rejected MIT, admitted Cornell, wait listed Princeton, pinnacle scholar Stevens Tech, honors Rutgers - and DD has decided Chemistry will be her route. We have sent out CC transcript so praying she gets off that wait list!
