I certainly could be wrong, but I have seen others on these boards suggest that such a person would be evaluated as an URM and that perhaps those reaches would not be quite as reachy. Others would know better than me, though.
I go back to my note in #13 - that all the discussion of will she or wonât she get in is not relevant - as long as her safeties are ones that she can afford and sheâd be proud to be at.
Sheâs mentioned RPI and now Pitt.
Whether she can or canât get into Cornell, Purdue, Ga Tech, or anywhere else is not relevant if she applies to two safeties and they can meet her need for affordability and fit.
She can apply to all - knowing she has great fall back positions - so trying to determine if she will or wonât get in at that point is not really relevant anymore.
Itâs why students need solid safeties - not just schools they can get into but schools where they can afford to and be proud to attend.
@iamomd - Your daughter sounds very well-qualified. In terms of Naviance, can you hover the cursor over the âdotsâ to see the major? That works for me. Also, have you looked at Naviance on type of application (Early Action/Decision vs Regular)? That can make a big difference.
If youâre looking at MIT, make sure to check out the âmaker portfolioâ section of the application WELL in advance of the deadline. Itâs something that, if we had known about, would have focused on years in advance of senior year. It used to be a rarity for applicants to submit one, but itâs becoming increasingly common, and I believe, hard to get in without (for an unhooked candidate).
