Chance my friend for NYU?

My friend really wants to get into NYU (NOT STERN), but hes very lazy-smart. He just realized what college is, and now is scared if he even has a chance for his dream school. He's currently a junior and is Asian. Can you chance him please?

SAT: (2 tests) 2280 superscore
GPA: 3.16 (there's the lazy part LOL. We go to a pretty good public school though I guess. This is unweighted his weighted is 3.18)

SAT II: Probably will get 750+ in Math II and US history.

Taken Ap's: AP World (3)

Ap's taking right now: Ap Lang, Ap US

AP's he's going to take: AP Calc AB, Ap Eco, AP Lit, Ap Comp Sci

He plays varsity tennis. Plays violin in the orchestra and has Piano NYSMA (a New York thing, 3 years of level 6 all 90+) Plays alot of league I guess lol (he helps in his family resturant alot)

He does have legacy 2 siblings all graduated NYU.

As you can see, this guy half-assed his high school classes alot and wants to know if NYU is still reachable or not despite high SAT. If it's not, can you post some matches for him please? If the responses look good, I might even chance myself (I'm looking at IVY's... I've heard the responses to those are dreadful haha). Thanks

Oh I forgot to mention he’ll probably get in semi or final for merit. He had a higher score than any NU cutoff ever (though close…)

His best chance is truly explaining his untapped potential in his essay. If NYU does interviews it could really help explain himself.

NYU: High match (this is not a school notorious for splitter friendliness)

solid match, esp if he’s not applying to Stern.

NYU is a really big school, so they will probably look primarily at SAT’s and GPAs. It’s hard to tell if colleges would rather have a lazy but intelligent student or a mediocre student with mediocre test scores. I would use parchment.com (beware: it’s not entirely accurate) to get a rough estimate.

NYU does not give interviews.
That being said, the GPA makes this a reach school. NYU went SAT-optional a few years ago, so the students that DO submit tend to have very high scores.
