USC: Low Reach
UCSD: Low Reach
UC Irvine: Match - High Match
UCSB: Match
@LomoKuan thanks for the chance, do you think it is harder to apply computer science or engineering?
@TimforCS I’ve been wondering that too but in most of the UC’s. Computer science is in College of Letters and Science, where as Computer Engineering is in the College of Engineering. From the threads I’ve been reading, College of L&S (Compsci) seems to be a bit easier, but nonetheless is still impacted
@LomoKuan not exactly what I was trying to ask, because the l&s computer science gets a BA not a BS degree, I was asking like computer science in the school of engineering vs electrical engineering/ computer engineering.
@TimforCS I’m looking at the UC application page right now while scrolling through the campuses. The collegeso f L&S that offer Compsci, seem to list a B.S. next to it?
And sorry but I can’t really differentiate the difficulty of admission between Compsci vs Comp Eng., may need to look through some threads
Really?! Cool! Can you link that page I’d like to check it out! @LomoKuan
@TimforCS Its the Official UC Application website. Google: UC Apps. Create an account.
The first step to beginning the app is picking campuses and majors you would like to apply to.
You get to see every single major B.S/B.A and which departments they are in.
I think it’s harder for CS than CE. UCLA had a chart for transfers and the admit rate for CS in engineering is a lot lower than CSE in engineering.
@DrGoogle is the same for right out of high school?
Yes @DrGoogle I was wondering the same thing.
Anyone need a chance back? Still accepting feedback!
Yes I would think the same for freshman applicant.
Then why is it easier to get into the L&S CS as opposed to the engineering on? @DrGoogle
I don’t understand why you put your # choice 4th on your list…
Your UC GPA is light for all the UCs you list. Your strong SATs may, or may not make up for it. Though SD is unlikely, all 4 could go either way. USC, probably not but, it’s worth a shot.
Add UCSC to your list. I think you’d make it into their well regarded CS program.
Good luck.
@NCalRent Thanks for the chance! I am surprised because I thought I was a solid match GPA wise for UCI, UCSB, and UCD? Did you accidentally chance me on computer science, instead of engineering? How else could I improve my chances?
@TimforCS UCI, UCSB, UCD, all have UC GPAs of above 4.0. Therefore, since Compsci is more impacted, you should be expecting a 4.1+ to look like a seriously strong applicant. Otherwise, my gpa (3.96) and yours of 3.92 would be considered just about enough to get into the school, with not much of a garauntee
@LomoKuan Yeah… but I am going to apply for Engineering, so it should be a bit easier.
I don’t have granular visibility to admissions by major. I do know, CS is one of the more competitive majors at all UCs so, it would take above avg GPA and SAT to feel comfortable about admission. I know UCSB’s school on Engineering is much smaller and somewhat more selective that the college of L&S. That is less true at the other campuses.
The avg freshman admit’s UC GPA at UCI, UCD and UCSB is better than 4.0 - So, your GPA is a little light at all 3 schools. Your SAT is in line at Davis and somewhat above avg at the other 2. Nonetheless, strong essays could tip the balance at one or all of them.
Those are the facts that informed my opinion.

You are a much stronger candidate at Santa Cruz

So would it be more beneficial to apply engineering or computer science, since I am not planning to apply to L&S computer science programs.
this is for UCI(planning to apply CSE):http://www.oir.uci.edu/files/adm/IA19-fall-fr-select-yield-by-major.pdf?R=63376
