What is UW GPA? And what major would they be applying for?

The major they apply for would have no impact on their admissions decision. The only thing that matters in that regard is what school the student is applying to. However, granipc is right in asking for the unweighted GPA-- it’s the only GPA UMich considers and is arguably the most important aspect of an applicant’s resume to them.

Also, any more details you could provide would be helpful. If you go through some other chance threads here, you’ll see the types of info other users give in addition to what you’ve provided.

His unweighted GPA is 3.93 and hw will be seeking a degree I computer science.

No one can really tell you your son’s chances but his SAT concordance (Michigan is an ACT state with all high school graduates required to take ACT) is within range as his the unweighted GPA. University of Michigan does not guarantee to meet need for out of state students, so that may or may not sway how you feel about the situation, but on the surface he could certainly apply. The Engineering school always as a slightly higher percentage of high GPA/high ACT kids than LSA. It’s always alittle tougher for out of state students to get accepted as the percentage of out of state students is lower generally than the percentage of in-state accepted students. If you son’s high school has had a good number of students apply to Michigan, his guidance counselor can probably give you some anecdotal information about students that were accepted in the past and might be more relevant to you than even the knowledgeable posters here.

Low math sat score for engineering but if he actually does have good EC’s he’ll have an ok chance. Not for sure in.
