I think his chances are very good. My S didn’t apply to UofM but many of his friends were accepted with similar stats. There is one girl in his class who was not accepted with similar stats though I really don’t know much about her EC’s.

My son had almost identical GPA, ACT and Rank - not as many AP’s or EC’s - and I always figured he had a 50/50 chance of being accepted (although he decided not to apply). Looking back at the effort my S put into his other essays - I think he may have been rejected had he applied.

Encourage your son to put a lot of effort into his essays and he should be fine.

Thanks for your encouragement and suggestion.

By the way, he has been sick for a couple of weeks and he got 3 Bs last semester. Plus he had 2 Bs in his previous years, totally he has 5 Bs. Considering he may not have very strong recommendation and assay, do you think if his consoler mentions about his sickness of last semester will add credit to his GPA?

If he were applying to LS&A I’d say he’d have a fairly good chance. However, rumors around campus are that COEnigineering has become ludicrously difficult (3.9 UWGPA & 35 MATH ACT averages). Your son is very close to those numbers but I’ve seen kids with his stats turned down by COE. I think the safe strategy if to view Michigan as a slight reach and have other options planned (Michigan State, Michigan Tech, UM-Dearborn then transfer after freshman year etc,).
