Not enough info to chance, regardless I would rely on the categorization of the HS GC, and Naviance/Scoir (if the school uses one of those). Is that GPA weighted or unweighted? AP test scores? Applying TO? Is UVM affordable?
May I assume he will not be submitting test scores? Would need to know more about the 3.3 to chance your son. If he truly gets A’s and B’s with no C’s (or worse) - I like his odds. The more transcript blemishes, well, you know…
Add in URI and he has great chances - meaning you won’t have to worry if he doesn’t get into UVM - he would get into URI…so you’d be covered.
Not what you’re looking for but…
Yikes, he put in IU-Bloomington and CU-Boulder…but not URI…
Correct, not submitting scores. All A’s and B’s…consistent for 4 years. But only 2 AP’s.
Are you in-state?
To me it looks like a reach. My wild guess is that it is probably a reasonable reach (admissions is possible but not a safety). UNH or U.Maine or U.Mass Lowell would be safer for admissions. However, which state you live in might have an impact on this.
UVM is expensive if you are out of state, particularly since it does not look to me that you are going to qualify for merit aid.
I threw in URI based on the geography…not enough info to rate IU and UCB.
If want big schools and geography no issue, look at schools like Arizona, Arkansas, Ole Miss, MIss State, etc.
Based on published stats from IU and CU, both are reaches.
Good luck.
Thank you - wow, that’s bothersome since Naviance indicates all green checks and he’s above the average…does it help that he’s at a private school in new england - college prep boarding school?
This might indeed help depending upon the school. UVM admissions should be familiar with any of the highly ranked private high schools in New England.
The counselors at your son’s high school should be familiar with how students from that particular high school do in admissions at the well known universities in the area. Their guess of “safety”, “match”, “reasonable reach”, or “high reach” would probably be more accurate than ours.
I think he has a good chance, although he probably won’t get merit. His gpa is in line with kids who are accepted from our LPS in MA.
call me an optimist, but I like his chances based upon everything shared.
OK that’s great…feeling better about it then! Yes, college counselor said it’s a “possible” as opposed to another school, U Denver, that she said was a “likely”
My ds is now a sophomore at UVM. I like your son’s chances, especially based on the Naviance info for his school you mentioned and the fact that he’s applying for arts and sciences vs. business, comp sci etc. I think CU is a sure thing, but it’s crazy expensive for oos and def don’t expect merit. If he applied A&S for IU his chances are good as well.
Denver is a money school. For the top students, it can get down to $45K a year or so. They offered $30K last year - $27K + $3K if you live on campus.
If you’re not someone they need, they’ll admit you as full pay.
CU had a 3.68 average GPA - but obviously will go lower and higher. The STEM majors are higher sought after there. They have a high acceptance rate.
If you get any aid, it’s a $25K over 4 years - meaning $6,250 a year. So it costs in the 50s. What is tough about CU is as kids move off campus, they also leave Boulder - as the cost is high and then you are commuting…at least the locals.
You can go to a lot less expensive schools - if money an issue. Your son is fine - he’s just not well known name school safe, etc.
Thank you - we’re ok on the money front but just hoping he gets accepted.
I really appreciate your input!
Still, why spend if you don’t need to. You might look at College of Charleston, Miami of Ohio, Pitt, and then to go for less - Wester Carolina, UTK, UTC, UAH, Mississippi State, etc.
Good luck…he’ll find a home…but since you noted UVM, check out Maine and URI.
