My son has very good test scores

34 ACT

math sat 700
CR sat 800
writing sat 800

his unweighted gpa is about a 3.6 (probably 3.7 by January)

his weighted is about a 4.3 (maybe 4.4 by January)

he takes lots of AP courses, and so far, has received four 5's, two 4's, and two 3's (the 3's are in AP Calculus and AP Physics)

his class rank is 5% (by two people)

his ECs are not particularly strong.

Basically, he does the debate team, and that's it.

Depends on whether he goes ED, but even if he doesn’t he looks pretty strong. If that’s where he wants to go, I bet you he’ll end up there.

Emory can be a bit quirky as to whom they admit.

Emory is big on debate… has he contacted people involved in debate on campus? That could be helpful for him.

Make sure that in his essays, he demonstrates what is special about Emory for him…and what is special about him for Emory.

Good luck to your son with Emory and his others applications as well. My son graduated from Emory in 2007…he had a wonderful 4 years there.

Great test scores, good grades. Definitely short on ECs, but if there’s one thing Emory likes, it’s debate. Has he gone to the debate tournament hosted by Emory? Anyways, he should be a competitive applicant.

chrome 16:

yes, he has gone to the debate tournament at Emory, and also ones at Yale and Harvard

Nice, sounds like he’s a very passionate and competent debater. That should help his case.
