GPA UW: 3.66 (3.75; 3.83 junior year)
W: 4.4
Rank: 22/600+
Pretty good public high school
ACT 31; writing 10 & Super-score 33; writing 12 (retake Sept)
8 AP classes total: 5 senior year, 2 junior, 1 soph: Taken only one AP Test - 5 on APUSH

EC: Internship for politican, lots of volunteering (festivals, library, organization that helps minorities vote), Tutoring (in-school, and paid out of school), Track and Field, Charity fundraiser - raised $500,

Essay: I wrote good ones and my teachers approved
Recommendations: Should be good - English and history teachers
Extra recommendation: Politician I interned for

Also, I'm an immigrant and have low income if this helps me any way

I think you have a very good chance of getting into Michigan, Vandy, and NYU. However, Northwestern, Chicago, and Stanford are reaches b/c your rank & SAT aren’t that high and you’ve only taken one AP exam (even though you took 3 AP classes).

Northwestern=mid-reach
Chicago=mid-reach (great essays can be a big factor)
UMich=OOS? then low reach (GPA is hurting you here)
NYU= high match-low reach
Vandy=mid-reach (rumor is that vandy is more stats based??)
Stanford= high reach (use your essay to stand out)

Your hopes are high. If you retake the ACT and score a 32+, you’ll increase your chances significantly. I suggest strongly consider taking SAT subject tests (and doing well in them) to help boost your profile. Good Luck :)

Thanks for the input.

More suggestions? I will chance back if you like.

^GoldOwl I’d say that a Top 5% rank constitutes as being pretty high, but I would agree that the OP’s test scores need improvement. Yes, the fact that the OP has taken so many AP courses but so little AP tests might also raise some eyebrows. Hopefully, the OP’s extracurriculars are a little more comprehensive than what he wrote in the thread, because if those are really all of his achievements, his chances will be slim.

Stanford is almost certainly out of reach, with everything else being a low to mid reach. Pick the school you like the best and ED there; that might be your saving grace.

Immigrant helps. I also like the upward grade trend and rigorous courseload. Your scores look good, but why did you only take 1 AP exam when you took all of the other AP classes? Colleges may not like that. You have good volunteering experience, I really like the internship for the politican. It will be a great asset to your application, especially if you have a recommendation from said politician.

Low match: Michigan
Match: Vanderbilt
High match: NYU, Northwestern
Low reach: Chicago
Reach: Stanford

Financial reasons for the AP Test, and during Sophomore Year, being an immigrant, I didn’t know the reason for an AP Test so I didn’t take them.

Why are some people saying NYU is good for me and others are saying it’s a high match. BTW, im not applying to stern, only college of arts and sciences.

You probably won’t get enough aid from nyu even if you get in… NYU is not very gracious with FA.
