KSMarinerdad and snappler, I may have been mistaken about parents automatically receiving a copy of Kings Pointer. Perhaps the USMMA Alumni Association, which is the channel for charitable donations to Kings Point, puts parents on the mailing list when they send in a contribution. But I double checked that back issues are available on the Alumni website. Here's another way to find it. When you go to USMMA's home page at United States Merchant Marine Academy, just click on Alumni. When the Alumni home page opens, click on News and Events. When the drop down menu opens, click on Kings Pointer magazine online. I hope this helps!

I have been following these Kings Point College Discussion pages for some months now often saying to myself that I really don't believe what I am reading. The young man who wants to become an officer in the Navy Seals seems to be looking for the easiest route to achieve that goal. While it is entirely possible that a couple KP graduates may have become Navy Seals that certainly doesn't mean that KP is an easy route to that goal. One KP graduate has piloted the space shuttle three times to the space station. A classmate of mine became a chiropractor another became a farmer. Several became lawyers, while more became ships masters and chief engineers.
This young man should be aware that the primary purpose of the United States Merchant Marine Academy is to train ships officers and officers in the merchant marine industry. There is no major offered in becoming a navy seal.
He also questions whether he would like the sea year. The year at sea is a major portion of Kings Point training and if he doesn't think he would like it why bother to go?
It would seem to me that if he is determined to become a naval officer then the Naval Academy should be his goal.

Bump: For the frequently asked Seal Team questions.

as close to zero as possible…

I am currently attending college and will graduate with a bachelor’s in criminal justice and a minor in political science. After college I plan to take all the steps neccesary to become a u.s. navy seal. I am a very good student, and also in very good shape (starting inside linebacker for my university for my entire career). I have always had a passion for my country and protecting it from terrorism. My goal someday is to be part of the FBI Hostage Rescue Team. My question is, will the US Navy Seals open all kinds of opportunities for me afterwards?

Go talk the the Navy recruiter then make it through BUDs before you worry about all that. You’ve already begun to disqualify yourself for either job with this post.
