I know that when you attend the MMA, you are enlisted in the Navy Reserve (I think). After graduation, will I still be commissioned as an Ensign in the SEALs/NSW? I have been unable to find a straight answer anywhere.

Also, here are my credentials.

I have been a camp counselor for 2 years.

I am in great shape (ran the 1.5 mile in less than 9 minutes at a slow pace)

O.K first of all, you are right. Your SATs are going to have to come up. Math is right at the mean score for the class of 2010 but I would try to bring it up as much as possible. Candidates with really great math SATs still struggle with calculus during plebe year at this academy. Mean critical reading is going to have to come up at least 100 points to be competitive. Class ranking is considered very important at KP because it gives them a good indication of how you fared when compared to other students taking a similar course load. My son’s school did not rank as a matter of policy but KP insisted on some kind of indication. They consider it to be THAT important. So, try to improve on that.
I would recommend a GPA of at least 3.5. Now, as to your SEALS/NSW question. When a midshipman graduates from KP they are commissioned as Ensigns in the Navy reserve unless they CHOOSE to go on active duty. In that case they can commission into any branch of the military that they choose. So, yes you can go into the Navy as an active duty officer and you might qualify for BUD/S. However, I can’t imagine a more difficult way to go. There are many who will tell you that this is the most difficult academy to graduate from because of the pace of the academics. The requirement that every midshipman spend a year at sea necessitates that they complete 4 years of course work in the 3 years that are spent on campus. Instead of two 16 week semesters each year these students have three 14 week trimesters. The same amount of material must, therefore, be covered in less time. Summer break is 4 weeks long. If you actually get a summer break that is. Training to be a SEAL is an enormous commitment. The year you spend at sea will interfere with that. It will be very difficult to give the full amount of attention to both. Now, having said that, it can be done and it has been done but it will require a herculean effort. The question is how much do you want it? If you decide to pursue this be sure you are going into it with your eyes WIDE open. KP is first and foremost a maritime academy and that is the focus of all of their efforts.

My son graduates on the 21st and will serve in the national guard reserves. There are a lot of options for you if accepted so study hard.
