Chance of getting into architecture programs?

I'm applying to:
Penn-State
Syracuse
UT Austin-1st choice: B.Arch + Architectural Enginnering
-2nd choice: Architectural Engineering
Rice
Carnegie Mellon
University of Waterloo

My GPA is not that high: 3.31 (3.5 last semester)
but I took 5 APs (2D Design, Physics B, Calc AB, Lang, Computer Science)
1 IB (Environmental Science)
6 Honor classes (Math, Chinese, English, Chemistry, Physics, Biology)
SAT: 2030 (retaking during October)
SAT II Math: 780 Physics:660 (retaking it during November)
AP Physics: 4
AP Lang: 3
TOEFL: 108/120.
I'm an international student (Indonesian Chinese), not a US citizen.
Play basketball.
Table Tennis varsity (junior year)
Chess Club leader (I joined since freshman year, I'm the leader this year)
Finished 8th grade in piano (freshman year)
Helped people building houses in Nepal.
Got gold medal in Fermat canadian math contest (junior year)
won a couple of intramural chess competitions. (freshman and sophomore year)
And does going to summer program in architecture in crease my chance?
Does legacy affect the admission? Because I heard students have a higher chance of getting in if their parents or relatives went there.

Hey there,

I couldn’t locate your message so I’m leaving my response here. Wow, it’s already September… I totally remember freaking out about university admissions and Common App and especially writing essays.

First of all, I applied to and got into CMU, USC, Syracuse, Illinois Institute of Tech, and Washington U in St. Louis. The only university I got rejected from is Rice. I was thinking of applying to Waterloo as my backup (WashU was my backup as well) but when I discovered that they required a 30 minute video of you explaining your portfolio, I removed it from my list.

In terms of stats, my GPA was 3.8, just because I’m from BC where 86% or higher is considered 4.0. For SATs, I had 2160 for Reasoning, 800 for Physics, and 750 for Math II. Since my high school didn’t offer the courses I wanted to take, I only took 2 AP exams.

The point of all this is to let you know that it’s not just about scores. Compared to other applicants, mine are not that highly competitive. However, this makes sense because for most of architecture schools, it’s not only about results, but also extracurriculars and most importantly portfolio.

Looking at your stats, I think you’re in a pretty good position. You’ve got good extracurriculars, such as awards, and I like how you have leadership experience (Chess Club). This is key because being an architect requires leadership cooperation skills. One thing that would help you is scoring a little higher on SAT Reasoning and Physics. 2100s for Reasoning and 700s for Physics will make your resume even more outstanding.

For portfolio, try to use as many kinds of media as possible. Using pencils for most of your pieces will make them think that your artistic skills are limited. In my case, I used pencils, color pencils, pen, conte, pastel, oil pastel, poster color, etc. I even had a few 3D works in my portfolio.

Going back to your question about CMU, their Architecture program is great (at least so far). I’m really appreciating my decision these days because I find that CMU Architecture is a perfect mix of art, history, and science. I’m glad that I didn’t go to IIT (although they offered me $60,000 in total) because they’re more focused on math and science aspects of architecture and I’m also glad that I didn’t choose Syracuse since the program’s all about theory and history.

Hope this helps!

PS - I recommend considering IIT. They replied a month after I submitted my application. Syracuse also is quick at getting back to you (it took them only 2 months).

Thanks Laurel327
I’m not sure how long the explanation for Waterloo should be.
Gotta send them an e-mail about that because on their website, they said that they required a 7 minute intro for the portfolio but I’m not sure whether it’s the whole video or for each piece. But I remember them saying that we can only explain a maximum of 3 pieces, so it might be 30 minutes long in total :frowning:
Now they also require the applicants to write an essay about a building near their living area and take an english exam called precis. I’m not in Canada so I need to ask them to mail me the exam in advance and I also need to get a proctor.
All that plus a portfolio. Lots of work. But their deadline is around March, so I guess i can handle it. I really like their co-op program.
I’ll try my best to use other kinds of media, I guess AP art will help me a lot. It’s pretty intense, It’s only 2nd week of school and I handed in 4 art pieces already (3 in pencil and 1 in charcoal).
I’ll go check out the curriculum for Syracuse. If they focus a lot on history and theory, then I’m probably not interested in it too. I’m leaning more towards the art, engineering, environmental sustainability, and design aspect of architecture.
I’ve also considered IIT but my dad told me that I can only apply to schools that are either top 10 in architecture or top 45 in overall ranking. Tried hard to convince him ( I wanted to apply to Tulane for the their program that offers M. Arch + B.S. Arch Engineering) but he didn’t agree.
Thanks a lot for the information
I’ll try my best to get my test score and grades up.
By the way, how many pieces did you have in your portfolio?
