Chance of negotiating scholarship in light of SAT scores

Hi all,

A high-ranked public university offered me $12000 a year for merit (tuition is $26000). This was without knowing my SAT subject test scores: perfect scores in chemistry, math II, and physics. I am glad to have gotten 12000, but the fact is I almost certainly cannot afford to go if I don't get extra help. If I call and tell them about my scores and politely ask to be reconsidered for aid, is there a chance anything will change?

It is always worth asking. My daughter increased her ACT score after her initial merit offer at her State school. She informed the school and her award was bumped up considerably. We did know that the higher ACT score qualified her for a different scholarship as her school had the requirements published (which is why she retook it). We emailed directly the man in charge of the scholarships.

It will depend on what the criteria for scholarships is at the school. It is certainly worth a try. Try directly contacting the head honcho of the scholarships department. Something along the lines of how grateful you are for the scholarship offer and asking if a higher one is possible based on your SATs etc. The worst they can say is no.

Good luck.
