Application is already in...thanks so much

bump......

Great stats for minority...the 6 in SL is not very impressive, but i don't think that it will overshadow your application...i think you have a good shot (but this year is so messed up, you can never know)
Chance me now please, since nobody else would chance the two of us! (i'm the "the sun is shining" thread)

wait you are just doing one IB subject...you can't get a diploma just for one subject you need 6 subjects, CAS, TOK and extended essay

lol, no, spanish is just what i've tested out in so far.

Finished all my CAS hours with many many extra...

I think you look pretty good for yale considering your URM status but i dont think anyone here can tell you how good of a shot you have because we dont know what other applicants are bringing to the table or what yale is looking for in applicants, but best of luck to you

thanks, i know it'll be really hard this year. The competition seems pretty stiff even among the people posting their stats on this forum. Definitely a little nervous.

I really dislike how so many people are overrating the value of URM in your application process

yes, URM will help you only slightly, since there are so many other african-american applicants who deserve to go to yale even without your racial status

that being said, your SAT score is low...even WITH URM

and a lot of your ECS seemed to have stopped in 11th grade - there is no real sense of devotion to that many of your extracurriculars, save Youth in government - be very careful of not making your ec list look like a laundry list (which its kinda beginning to look like at the moment)

id say you have a shot at yale. Not a decent shot, not a horrible shot. but a shot.

hope i didnt appear too harsh, but im speaking honestly, since yure asking for an honest chancing

Thank you for your honesty. I was concerned people were overvaluing the URM aspect. I'm glad someone gave a candid answer.

I was worried that my EC's would be an issue. A lot of it wasn't out of a lack of devotion, just the fact that many of my EC's aren't available until the my Junior year (NHS, Academic Team, MLK Committee, School of Govt, etc). Once I was able to join the clubs I was passionate about, I dropped ones that were less important to me simply because there wasn't enough time in the day to do all of them. Once I was able to join the clubs I enjoyed, I devoted enough time to them to obtain leadership positions and make some fairly substantial changes. Hopefully that shines through enough in my application, but I guess we'll wait and see.

Your SAT scores are fine for ANYONE, URM or not. I'd say you have as decent a shot as anyone. Good luck.

mono17200, make sure you mention in your app the fact that some clubs were only available to upperclassmen. And try grouping your ECs into a couple of categories so rather than having a laundry list, you have related activities. That goes a long way.

Michiganman, I fear you are being too optimistic on SAT scores, but there are lots of threads that cover the realities of that on this forum. But net - for an unhooked applicant, in the Ivy League and the other top colleges including Williams, Amherst, etc, scores in the low 700s will mean extremely low odds of getting in, unless you have a spectacular EC (and I mean spectacular, not just pretty good). At HYPS, minuscule odds.

Of course an unhooked applicant would have a harder time with those scores. The scores themselves aren't low, it's just that there are too many similar applicants applying for the same spot. All other things being equal, top schools only have a few things to use to differentiate the mass amounts of overrepresented applicants: test scores and extracurriculars. Now, it's hard to even differentiate with those, because money and time can tailor both.

But money can't make you underrepresented, which the OP is. His scores are stellar, good enough for HYPS, good enough for any school. HYPS's scores are only ridiculously high because competition between clone applicants necessitates it.

You're right: An unhooked applicant with those scores would have a small chance at HYPS. But only because tens of thousands of people JUST LIKE HIM, with similar or better scores would be applying as well. That's not the case for the OP. He has a good chance, a far better chance than most people, probably.
