How do you afford to live in the Bay Area on such a low income?

Well, basically, my mom's family used to be SUPER rich back in Taiwan (they owned a massive company), so I guess my mom probably has some family fortunes (not a lot though). My mom didn't really do well in college, and she pursued a major that she had no interest in (Fashion design), so that's probably the reason why my family is low income, yet scraping by in the Bay Area. My mom is probably going to move away after I graduate. :D
