ChanceMe: NYU, Wesleyan, Tufts, Williams, and Amherst

I’m applying to 44 schools (I know I’m crazy) but these are a few of my top choices.
Black & Middle Eastern Female. Household: Under 10k, EFC=0. Single Mother. Intended Major: Polysci. GPA: 3.78UW/4.08W. SAT: low 1200s (and 60 points lopsided :(( ). Small Charter School (doesn’t rank).

4 APs (school doesn’t offer many)

ECs: Student Body Vice President, Black Student Union Events Coordinator for 3 years, Top Speech Competitor in the State of California, Team Captain on S&D Team, Over 200hrs of Volunteer Work, 3rd in LA County Mock Trial, Worked for an African Baskets Company for all four years, Did Hurricane relief for St. Thomas for 3 years, Wrote and Produced Original Songs for 4 years

Honors: (Speech and Debate) 2nd in Cali for Prose, 8th for Dramatic Interpretation, 6th in state for Original Prose and Poetry, Over a dozen LA county/state level championships, qualified for Speech and Debate Nationals, Medal of Special Distinction (I have others but most of them happened in 9th or 10th grade so I don’t really mention them)

College Essays/Extenuating Circumstances: I write about moving to St. Thomas USVI and getting hit by Hurricane Irma and being stranded for 3 months. My other essay is about the cycle of Domestic Abuse I was thrown into and how I intend to break that mold by receiving a collegiate education. 8.5/10

Letter of Recs: probably a 8-9/10
(If anyone could recommend a few safeties/matches as well that would be great)

You have great ECs and honors. I guess your gpa and sat score are your weaknesses but doesn’t mean you don’t have any chances!

Try to write a brilliant essay (instead of listing what you did/experienced, focus on what you learned and how you grew from those moments!) at this moment, since it’s hard to increase your SAT or GPA, i think you should just stick to the essays and try to come up with the best essay

Good luck!

Why is her GPA: 3.78UW/4.08W her weakness?(I can understand your comment about the standaradized test/SAT score being a bit on the lower side of the pool) but GPA can depend on lots of factors - she is at a small charter school & it looks like she takes the best offered. Not trying to be snarky but does she need a 4.0 unweighted…and sky’s the limit weighted?
