I will be completing my freshman year in high school but I can already predict what most of my grades will be. This year didn't go as well as I had initially hoped. First semester I got straight As, with an A- in biology and spanish. This semester, it looks like I will be getting all A-s, with a B/B+ in spanish and either a B+/A- in biology. Note that I put slashes because I am unsure of some of my grades

Also, I am contemplating taking math courses at the local community college to bolster my resume. If I do this, I will be able to finish calculus by sophomore year.

Are my chances at ivies, namely Harvard, Stanford, and accelerated med school programs, shot?

that is by no means a terrible year. it is actually quite a good year.

you are obviously not very well informed about this process. otherwise you would know that stanford doesn’t even consider freshman grades.
and you would realise that simply considering all ivies and stanford is unperceptive, unwise, and unintuitive. don’t consider a school simply because it’s on top 10 lists.

moreover, you are only a freshman. your concern now should be doing well in HS and finding out what you are passionate about. finishing calc by sophomore year isn’t a prerequisite for admissions. only do it if math is something that you’re really interested in and if it allows you to pursue that interest in school, or if you find yourself unchallenged by your present pace.

don’t start living your life for adcoms. you will find it reaps you little benefit at a great cost to your HS experience.

and get off CC until next summer unless you’re using it as a tool for things like AP help. otherwise, it is simply an addicting, often demoralising distraction.

I’m an upcoming sophomore and my freshman year was 10 times as bad. I had a 3.198 GPA, but with all honors and one AP. I also got two 72’s in accel math both semesters. You are off to a good start, while I need some catching up to do. You also will need to apply to other schools besides Ivy’s and top 10 schools. People who apply are all mostly qualified, but not all will get in. Good Luck!

I have an 87% average thank you. I’m in the top 40% of my class too, but are you serious? Seriously, I know A LOT of kids who failed a class or two freshman year. I also was in all HONORS classes and one AP class. I could have gotten a 4.0 easily if I would have been in CP classes. A 3.198 GPA isn’t nearly bad and I know lots of school would accept me at this point. I’m actually applying to Bard College at Simon’s Rock this fall.

early college is a good option if your school can’t provide sufficient challenge to you. your school obviously can, otherwise straight As in honours would be a breeze for you

Bard College at Simon’s Rock is def. not the same as all the other programs out there. It is different and unique and the only EARLY COLLEGE of its kind. People don’t need a great GPA to be accepted. People go there for many different reasons. I would like a head start and I’m actually an actor so the younger the better!

as a freshman, you shouldn’t be as tense as you are. work hard and everything will follow. you can’t spend your entire high school worrying about getting admitted into harvard

MechiganBoy: Are you calling me an idiot? And youknowwho you did not have a bad freshman year, it’s getting annyoing when you had a good one. Stop Complaining!

Sorry early_college, I guess I’m just really stressed and nervous. I didn’t mean for my posts to come off as complaints. I’ve been under a lot of pressure, placement tests, finals, the like.

I know how you feel. I already had all my finals already and etc. It’s just that you are not making bad grades and you should be proud of yourself. I have gotten 2 72’s in math and I got an 83 and 84 on my transcript too. I have an 87 average, but that’s a lot worse than you. It’s frustraing when someone thinks they have bad grades and a bad freshman year, when you (me) actually are the one who had a bad freshman year. That’s is all, :)

Your freshman year isn’t near as bad as you think. Just focus on improving in your Sophmore and Junior years and these grades won’t even be given a second thought. Don’t worry about, and just keep up the good work! :)

You’re off to a good start. Focus on the program of the specialty that you hope to pursue at the school, not the school’s ranking or name. There are tons of schools to consider, not just those. Also consider which schools you’d likely get merit scholarships in, and which offer the best residency match options. I’d take a few community college classes, take AP classes, and get good test scores. More than that, just enjoy your high school experience. It only happens once-- you’ll end up finding a good college that’s right for you.
