Chances anybody???

By the way, does Penn consider Miami, Florida to be an area that they don't usually get many applicants from. If so, would living here help me in my application?

Smartbrotha, I don't think colleges even look at a 5 (on an IB Test) in terms of giving out credit, so I don't think it would tilt it in your favour. I'm assuming you took SL Math. I remember reading on Businessweek that Wharton looks down on applications who don't take the most rigorous Math available to them.

Well, I did take SL, but that is only because my school is new and just got approved for the IB program last year. My school does not offer any math classes HL. And, I am definately taking the most rigorous math available, because I am taking AP Calc BC. Hopefully, Penn will understand that I am, by no means, trying to take teh easy road out. I love math and I am always looking for a new challenge.

Oh ok, I just assumed you took SL on purpose. Well Good luck

okay thanx milki

bump anybody???

Does anyone know if Miami, Florida is a place that Penn usually takes students from, or is it a location in which they try to gain applicants? Basically, does living in Miami, Florida provide any advantages or disadvatages?

being a first gen student definitely helps. however, im pretty sure its just an overall appearance thing, and wont knock you over the edge into admission (if be the case).

Okay good. Also, on my app, they didn't ask if I was a first generation student, rather they asked the highest level of education received by my parents. I'm guessing that Penn will put 2 and 2 together and come up with me being a first generation? However, were they looking for me to explicitly state it somewhere, or is this sufficient?

With those SAT scores, you have no chance of getting into tier-1 or tier-2 schools

Wow Paul. So ONE test eliminates me from being considered at a top tier school? The last time I checked colleges did a holistic approach. I can't believe that a college would automatically dismiss me because of my scores. I know my scores are low, especially for Ivy Leagues. However, I am counting on the rest of my application to shine for me. Doesn't a college consider any of that, especially since the last 13 years I've been in school working hard to get good grades.

Smart, be a bit more humble. Holistic admission is an urban myth, go look up the common data sets. The average SATs keep going up. It's harder for everyone, including URMs to get into top schools. As has been covered a lot on this site, colleges are getting lots of applications from recent African and Caribbean immigramts. More so than American blacks. I went to high school with some of the top URMs in the Country who were rejected by HYP. Ivies are rejecting 75% plus of URM apps. The secret's out, everyone and their cousin are applying.

Your scores are low for top schools, even as a URM. Florida will not help.

Hopefully one or more will see something special in you.

Hey suze, please read my post about affirmative action and give me your opinions.

Distribution of SAT I Scores

Score Percent
Admitted
Critical Reading Math Writing
750-800 27% 22% 28%
700-740 22% 19% 22%
650-690 18% 16% 17%
600-640 15% 15% 13%
550-590 9% 9% 10%
That is from upenn's incoming class website from last year. only 9% of applicants in the 550-590 range were accepted from EACH math and verbal and 13% for writing even given ur on the low end of the 600-640, that doesnt mean u have a 10% chance of admission by test scores, it means its much lower because chances are they didnt score in that end on all 3 if they got in. this is why ur getting such a hard time, no1s questioning whether ur a good student or not, just realize the numbers arent with u and theres plenty of places u can succeed from.

I know big ticket. I'm not disputing the facts. However, it is a proper way to deliver them. And, that excludes sarcasm/disdain. I was expressing that no one but the college admissions officers can predict who "deserves" to go to thier school, and even then its unpredictable. I wanted honest opinions, which i appreciate you giving. However, I didn't ask for anyone to look down upon me and tell me that i probably couldn't get into an average college.

guys, come on, i mean, lets not hate on each other here. we all have the right to our own opinions. and smart, to answer your question about how significant is your geographic location....well, let me ask you this, how many ppl from ur region get admitted to the ivies each year?

Actually hater, i don't know. Is it anyway to find out how many get admitted in the Florida (Miami) area?

the only way is through penn's website, if they dont have it, then you cant find it

Brotha, you're about to go out into a bigger world when you're talking the likes of Wharton and Stern. Be above answering those with issues. Keek your focus, continue to work hard and go to Wharton for grad school. You don't have to tell people they're no better than you, it's much beter to show them.

thanx. I intend on showing the world what a dedicated worker I am.
