Chances, anyone? I fail at school.

I'm an upcoming senior at Carroll Senior High School (yeah, football <3). Although I'm an Asian Male, my efforts don't mirror the numbers that other "typical" asians have. I know it's not particularly helpful applying to Rice in-state, but I figured I'd post so you could all have a stab at me.

In all seriousness though, I'd like a honest review. While most people are comforted by hearing good news (I would, too) , I would like to hear what's good/bad so I could know what to work on or look forward to.

Academics:
GPA - Unweighted: 3.92
GPA - Weighted: 4.12
Class Rank: 22
Class Size: 647
(so, roughly, 3%) I had a terrible and grades for the first two years in high school, but I pulled a 180 this year. I'm amazed that I could prevent myself from drowning. :D

I'm confident that I can manage some solid recommendations headed my way, but I'm still dawdling on what to write about on these essays. I mean, what can I contribute to Rice University?

Camp Counselor for [Circle of Friends], a summer camp for mentally disabled children and teenagers.

Hopefully some of those doods I work with at the Baylor Medical Center can put in a good word for me. Or something. Cause that would be like, super awesome. :D

If anyone could give an unbiased opinion of my chances for Rice, it'd be warmly appreciated. You can poke me with sarcasm, but I'll end up thanking you anyways.

just apply! you won't know unless you try. you seem to have good stats, have good essays and recommendations and you have a chance. not to be annoyed.....but everyone is asking about chances...but if we said that you didn't have a chance, does that mean you wouldn't apply, c'mon...you have to atleast try.

I hope I don't come across as rude when I say this, but I've heard that response so many times - I still feel vastly inadequate when I compare myself to most of the other candidates.

Oh, and it's nice to see someone else from Texas. <3

well to make you feel better...I had about the same EC's...you know UIL Math team, NHS, band, class officer, Academic decathlon and other stuff...but you definetly have a better SAT score than me and your ACT is higher also...but thats not all they look for, though it helps....if you have good recs and essays you will have a good chance. some poeple can have the perfect scores, but Rice may feel they are not right for the school...so just apply, it can't hurt.

oh and i hate your football team....cuz they are good :)

Not to be a downer, but I hope we do just as well this year. We lost our coach, so even if he didn't make a difference, that's a huge morale boost right there. :|

Although, we DO have some conspicuously beefy freshman that will be playing varsity next year. D:

Anyways, dragon2owl, are you in Rice? (cause that would make me feel totally awesome)

yes i am at Rice, i'm going to be a sophomore. I appied interim, and I didn't really do the Rice application. They took my Questbridge scholarship application as the application, i just had to do a supplement.

At the collegeboard.com website, if you sign in you can compare your stats: SAT, ACT scores, class rank, etc. with the incoming freshman class (probably from '06) I'm too lazy to do it for you (sorry) but you could also look at other schools in addition to Rice. It is quite fantastic.

You definitely don't fail at school. Apply!

Awww, thanks. :D

you are average. I suggest doing something out of the norm.

Yeah, I figured I was lacking something out of the norm. Anyways, could you please elaborate on "out of the norm" ? :o

I'm not much a fan of bumping, but I figured it wouldn't hurt. ><

Anyone else care to comment before I slice off my hands? D:

Do you really think a 2210 is "gross" even though it puts you around the 60th percentile of admitted students? Rice is an outstanding school, but I don't think it's so hypercompetitive that it's out of your league. It's definitely a match school for you, and it's going to come down to whether you write strong essays or not. Whatever you're looking for, be it sympathy or praise, please find it elsewhere.

i hate ur team... they were ranked 1 again by dallas morning news... but i fope u guys kick those thug kids from miami northwestern all the way back to the ghetto... but after that i'll still hate you... oh i will be placing a 50 dollar bet on southlake carroll to beat the thugs on 5dimes.com the costa rican betting website

Iterant, keep on working hard and you will get in...don't listen to no one.
