Hello, I am currently active duty Army stationed at Fort Hood, Texas, and I have been working my a** off to set my self to transfer to UT-Austin upon me getting out. I officially will be out of the army in 2016, and I am looking to transfer for the 2016 summer semester. Unfortunately it is challenging enough balancing one or two classes at a time with working 12-16 hour days and going to the field for weeks at a time. So no surprise, most of my classes I have taken are online. My goal is to have 30 credits upon transfer, and a 3.7 GPA. Here is my current resume. I am granted in state tuition in most states, and post 9/11 GI Bill will cover all costs. So I just need to get in. I posted over in the transfer forums as well.

Just my thoughts, for what they are worth:

3.7 is a good GPA for UT’s undergraduate studies major or the College of Liberal Arts.

The fact that many of your courses are online shouldn’t matter as long as your college does not note the online classes differently on your transcript. I took an online class my last summer at ACC, and there was no way to tell the difference on my transcript.

Your high school academic record is irrelevant for UT transfer as long as you have 30 hours. You will need to send in your high school transcript AFTER you are admitted. Your EC resume goes back five years.

UT prefers transfers who have 30 hours by the application deadline (March 1) and is now only holding a few spots for applicants who will have 30 hours by June 1.

Overall, I think you have a good chance.

There is nothing in your post that indicates math and science courses. Without a very strong track record in math and science, Mech Eng is going to be a stretch. Be sure to list an easier to get into major as your second choice.

Credit for at least Calculus I & II and Calculus-Based Physics I (with lab) is required to be looked at for Engineering. If you have only this bare minimum coursework you aren’t competitive. Additional math & science will make you more competitive.

Thanks. I posted this to get a good grasp of what I need to be doing over my last year in the army to be competitive. I do plan to take a science and a mathematics course within the next year. I just know as along as I am in the army, and bound to 60+ hour work weeks, I cannot commit to succeeding at anything harder than biology and algebra. My plan is to transfer in undecided with at or just over the 30 credit minimum. After I hit 60 credits at UT, and get in some more competitive coursework, I want to apply to change majors to mechanical engineering.

Just a heads up, UT will not allow you to change majors after 60 hours, so you would have to apply in the semester you are completing 60 hours. Also most majors will not review applicants who list their department as 2nd choice
